City Watch

The City Watch of Lenen is a very old and prestigious organization tasked with the protection of the city and all its inhabitants. It is sometimes also referred to as the City Guard or simply as the Watch. The organization has been around even before the city officially became the residence of the royal family and therefore the capital of Keider. The Watch consists of a large number of soldiers and is led by a Captain.

The exact number of soldiers in the City Watch is not public knowledge and changes based on budget and percieved amount of crime. The Captain is appointed by the City Council, which is responsible for any political, economic and other matters concerning the city of Lenen and its relations with other cities. Generally, the Captain has to be approved by the King as well, though there have been exceptions to this rule in the past.

The main purpose of the City Watch is to ensure the safety of the city and citizens from threats within and without. Its duties include guarding the city gates and walls as well as patrolling the streets for the citizen's safety. Both helping those in need of assistance and finding and arresting criminals is part of the duty of the Watch. Being a member of the City Watch is considered a privilege and a great honour.
The Watch has traditionally been a pretigious organization known for its loyalty to the city and the crown. On the outside, it still seems to be that way, but internally it's a different story: Some members of the guard have been part of a secret guild of assassins operating from Lenen for quite some time.

Recently, a member of the Guild has been placed in the position of Captain. His approval has been made possible by other members already placed within the city's administration. This has caused the City Watch to consistently turn a blind eye to certain types of criminal activity.

I love the sidebar information. It's what takes this from being any old city watch to a very engaging article.
