Mistressdom

For the Kings of Keider and other high-born men, it is completely normal and possibly even expected to have a mistress, but things that are normal for a King are sometimes frowned upon by most other people, mistressdom especially so. For most people, adultery is a major offense against the laws of the gods, which is why many consider mistressdom a symptom of the moral decay amongst nobility and royalty.

Confronted with this double-standard, nobles will often argue that their marriages are usually purely political and between complete strangers, who often come to ignore, tolerate or even despise each other. According to this argument, a mistress is necessary in order to keep the King company and to sate any sexual desires the King might have.

But a mistress isn't simply a bonified whore. Ideally, she is a beautiful, intellegent woman of noble birth, who can not only satiate sexually but also intellectually. A mistress is also often considered a model of court culture and sometimes even gets a say in a King's political decisions. In most cases, one and the same woman is the King's mistress for many years.

Generally, a mistress will be provided with a salary and housing. Sometimes she may be given a title or even her own property. Any children the King and his mistress might have together will also be provided for. Mistresses sometimes are married to noblemen, but it is usually considered an honour for someone's wife to be the King's mistress. Also, being a mistress' husband can provide a chance for social and political progress.
Usually, mistresses are interested in keeping their royal lover alive and in power for as long as possible. Not so Lady Arminda, King Ageun's mistress, a member of the Guild, who became frustrated with the culture at court and began to make plans to replace the King.

Her plan involved waiting for the right time to first get rid of Crown Prince Esmir, then kill the King and finally to place her and the King's son Aslo, next in line after Esmir, on the throne instead.

Her plan nearly succeeded but was foiled by Feire, a young member of the Guild originally tasked with eliminating the Crown Prince, who helped said Prince to fake his own death in order to be able to come back and foil the mistress' plan.
