Yatagarasu

This large three-legged crow led Japan’s legendary first emperor Jinmu across the Kumano region to conquer the peninsula and establish his rule in Nara.   Jinmu's first battle was a disaster, and he realized that he had erred in approaching from the west. As a descendent of Amaterasu the sun goddess, he should have traveled from the east. Yatagarasu led him across the Kii penisula to enable this approach, and his next assault was successful.   (A three-legged crow is also associated with the sun in Chinese mythology.)   Once his role as guide to the first emperor was completed, Yatagarasu became a stone, which is now enshrined at Nachi Taisha.
