Dhampir
ADVISORY: This Species requires approval before being played.
Dhampir (Pronounced Dam-peer) are always the half blood offspring of a vampire and a parent of any race or species capable of reproducing with the vampire. Dhampir are born with the vampirism disease, the symptoms of which may start to manifest at any part during the Dhamphir’s life. While the Dhampir is infected by the Vampirism disease, this does not always result in the person becoming a vampire. It is perhaps lucky for the Dhampir that they cannot pass the vampirism disease any farther. Dhampir Age normally for the first 18 years of their life. Afterwards their aging slows and they live to a maximum of 150 years. Though most are killed or succumb to the disease long before they reach old age.
A Dhampir typically tries to blend in, a wrong move or mistake often means being hunted by Witch Hunters or any who would want to see the half-vampire dead. While they are rare it is more likely that you will find a Dhampir in Coast Haven, Quinaria, or other locations where it is easier for them to blend in with the populace.
They are noticeable by their long fangs, which most are able to retract or learn to retract with age. Sometimes they are seen with long pointed ears or talon-like claws. Oftentimes their eyes are yellow, red or purple hued. They range from looking healthy and full of life to having a sickly pallor. Though the species is diverse in appearance, what often causes trouble for the dhampir, and unites them all are the symptoms of the vampirism disease.
All dhampir share a bloodlust. However unlike Vampires, all dhampir bloodlust can be satiated by raw meat and other alchemical compounds such as various serums in addition to the option of blood. This bloodlust, while lowkey always present, means that dhampir tend to be more on the aggressive side, especially when their patience is tried. All dhampir share a similar uncomfortable feeling when basked in full sunlight. While it does not actively hurt them, it is not pleasant and so many dhampir do their best to obscure themselves from it. Dhampir may find themselves having trouble sleeping, eating or drinking, which further alienates them from the general populace and adds another layer of acting to help themselves blend in. Clothing items such as hoods and scarves and other obscuring pieces are often a tool in a dhamphir’s arsenal to remain blended in while in the company of those who may wish to see them hunted, as they can obscure mouths and protect from the sun.
There are very few places in the world where a Dhampir can live openly and without any active suspicion as most places understand dhampir to be on the precipice, between normal being and monster. They are often hunted by Witch Hunters throughout Arawyn, who may pick up contracts to help prevent a new vampire from coming into existence or because the dhampir in question made too many mistakes and roused suspicion. Even in the best of circumstances, people are often suspicious of dhampir who do not take the extra effort to demonstrate they are taking steps to combat their disease; given how easily accessible the ways to treat the disease's progression are. A dhampir who refuses serum or raw meat as an alternative to blood is asking for a witch hunter or mob to be on their doorstep.
While dhampir in Travance have it somewhat better than in the rest of the world, the laws do not protect them for their mistakes and because of the cultural, economic and development hub that Travance is, mistakes are often weighed more heavily there. Travance has ways to keep the monster inside at bay, and to actively shun those options is to risk looking like one is giving into the disease and inviting whatever hardships that entails in this powerful town.
