The Seven Sisters

Also called the All-seeing Ones, the Seven Sisters are hailed in Demarn as being responsible for herding one’s soul through the river leading to their afterlife. They are generally depicted as warriors in full armour and have been for some centuries, although this was not always so. Whilst the temple chants state that the Sisters look favourably upon those who fight death with every step, this is often twisted by the army and mercenaries into the belief that to die during battle, or due to it, is a good death that will grant them instant passage into the afterlife.     Olwyn, Forgiver of Sins   Often invoked during ceremonies where the truth in a speaker’s words may be used as evidence if the lie be judged as severe enough. Unlike her sisters, Olwyn is depicted in all mediums with no weapon and her arms are often open as if seeking to embrace the observer.     Cadwyn, Binder of Truth   Like Olwyn, this goddess is called upon in ceremonies. But where Olwyn sees and judges, Cadwyn binds the speaker to their words. In this vein, depictions generally have her with spiked chains or knotted lengths of rope entwining her arms.     Ifor, The Bow, and Seath, The Arrow   Like the bow and arrow are rarely separated, so are these two goddesses when spoken of. Colloquially mentioned by their weapons rather than their names, current texts refer to them as twins, whilst older ones claim they are lovers. Either way, they are said to stand at the entrance to the river, ready to defend against any who mean a traveller harm. Naturally, they are both shown to wield the aforementioned weaponry.     Torlan, The Guide   Said to lead a weary traveller down the tunnel. Although some say she was once depicted with a simple shepherd’s staff, most statues and paintings of her clearly show her wielding a spear.     Elan, The Light   Since the fall of the Domian Empire and the rise of Udynea, the goddess Elan is only ever seen holding aloft a lantern or firebrand. Speculation amongst some scholars is that this sister was originally associated with magic but, when her people learnt to fear its usage in their enemies, they expunged all signs of its normality from their lives. Her role is meant to hold back the darkness and allow those who have died to see a clear path through the tunnels.     Aerona, The Executioner   Those who fail to earn Olwyn’s forgiveness must face Aerona. She has been depicted with many weapons, from clubs to swords and spears. The common version is of her wielding a half-moon axe. One blow is believed to leave the struck dazed and drifting forever in the lightless tunnels.
