Carcoline

"Preheat the oven at the outset   "Melt the butter in a saute pan over low flame and add the shallots, carcoline squares and garlic. Slowly saute until squares are the consistency of rubber. Season with pepper, and then stir in the parsley. Set aside and let cool.   "For the garlic and parsley butter: Mix together the butter, pepper, parsley, garlic and tarragon until very smooth. Season with more pepper, if needed.   "Place squares so each stands alone, and then coat with garlic and parsley butter. Top each square with a fine brioche crouton. Bake until the butter is bubbling and the squares are golden brown. Serve with brandyfrost."   ~100 Non-Turnip Recipes for Veteran Turniptails, by Azeef Hazard

Manufacturing process

Carcoline is mined from the same mines as Carcolite, though it is produced in much higher quantities   For rations, it is cut into half pound loaves or bricks and soaked in garlic oils for several days. Then, it is stacked up in smokehouses and smoked slowly in birchwood-coal smoke. The result has the consistency of an average mushroom and the flavor profile of garlic cheese. Though slightly on the bland side, it is impossible to add salt to the meal as any amount of salt exposure causes the ochre to sizzle into an inedible foam. Throwing salt on the enemy’s stores is a popular tactic..

Significance

Carcoline is edible ochre mined from beneath Carcol, and only there. It is pinkish gray, sometimes tinged or veined in blue. While there are thousands of ways to prepare it, when prepared properly as use for rations it can last years before going bad.   Bricks of carcoline weigh a half pound and can be eaten throughout the day, each one providing a full days’ meal. While long exclusive use of the ochre can result in scurvy and rickets, and gluttonous overuse can cause gout, it is well suited as a ration for short to medium campaigns, as well as even longer if fruits or vegetables can be acquired on the way.
