Rencer Guards
"I don't know where they come from. The locals don't interact with them privately. They have to be mercenaries, but whoever heard of a mercenary that doesn't want their name out there?"
~Ellayne Warbough, Sheriff of Alcedene
Composition
Manpower
Port Terrence doesn't let on how many guards they actually have. The uniform covers the face, and the guards go by rank designations rather than names, which artificially inflates their presence. It is believed that there are upwards of 30, much higher even than villages twice the size of Port Terrence.
The spells that maintain the guard force keep the force at 50, with one leader unaffected by the spell.
Equipment
Rencer Guards wear splint armor, a closed mask skullhelm, and good quality infantry boots.
Weaponry
They wield truncheons as most guard forces do, and carry quality crossbows.
Structure
The Sheriff of Port Terrence leads the Rencer Guard Force, directing the manpower directly.
Tactics
Rencer Guards are notoriously direct, charging headlong at whatever it is they should be opposing.
As far as tactics go, they do have one trick up their sleeve: in the event of a large threat to Port Terrence, they have been known to open the dykes to the irrigation canals surrounding the village. The flooded ground becomes muddy and nearly impossible to maneuver in, while the Rencer Guards will pole around in the shallow, bronze bottomed river boats used by the village and club the helpless enemy without pity.
Training
Rencer Guards rarely train, and only really do so to intimidate or impress guests or citizens.
Logistics
Auxilia
In times of duress, Rencer Guards can draw up the Rencer Balatar to pad out their numbers, though this is not typically a problem.
Recruitment
Rencer Guard are produced by a modified Clone spell like effect from the Raus Ukavone. There are "reserves" curled dormant in fluid-filled cysts in the ten acres surrounding the town. When a guard dies, a replacement spontaneously births and seeks out the dead one to loot their equipment.
History
The Rencer Guard were spawned when Terrence the First bought a mysterious artifact from an explorer who had been surveying the damage from the fall of Lake Hope. The traveler had claimed that it was a piece of stone from the Orc spawning pools, and he turned out to be correct.
When Terrence the First attuned to the rock, ten acres of his land were converted into a spawning pool of sorts, and the Rencer Guard emerged. It was this that truly gave the Plutarch the idea that he must be blessed by the Demiurge to rule the land as progenitor of kings.
Historical loyalties
The Rencer Guard are fanatically loyal to the Terrence family, and nobody else.
