The Dreamlands

Theories and myths abound about the Dreamlands. Contrary to the name, it is not the place your soul always goes when you dream. Normal dreams are a space between, the psychic bleeding of the vast reaches of the Dreamlands as it nears reality. Other than this, not much is known.

Geography

The geography of the Dreamlands is mutable, prone to change, and often just plain strange. The plane is entirely constructed of ectoplasm of varying potency, from soft, swampy goo to vapor to diamond-hard psychic force.   The sky is always a twilight purple with stars visible, though the locals laugh at the notion that these are "stars." A silvery, diaphanous orb of gas provides enough light to see clearly. The locals call this "the moon" though it is clearly not a solid structure.   While the ground never moves while observed (as far as anyone knows), it is prone to writhing undulations and wild rearrangements when not watched. Even turning your back to a terrain feature means you may never see it again. Obviously, this makes navigating the land difficult, though the locals have no such problem.

Fauna & Flora

Large outcroppings that resemble mushrooms pass for vegetation in the Dreamlands. They can be small and numerous like grass, or towering high like cedars with umbrellas. They glow with a soft blue light, and eating them will prolong the dreamer's stay. It is rumored that eating them for too long will cause the dreamer to live there permanently.   Small creatures that resemble hybrids of squirrels and ferrets dominate the natural order. They are called chitterlings, and they feed on psychic energy. While usually content to devour portions of the landscape, a dreamer is a rare and delicious treat if they can catch one at a disadvantage. Even so, they rarely kill their victims, simply draining their energies until they are no longer potent to be attractive and then leaving them to their fate.   "The locals" are known as Oneirites. Oneirites are ghostly white or black as a void, with disturbingly human eyes set in their unichrome faces. They are flighty, prone to mood swings, and sometimes predatory. They build fabulous cities of twisting spires, conduct wars with each other for fun, and conduct themselves more often than not as gibbering lunatics. The full scope of their abilities is unknown. They are also shapeshifters. They make up the "other soul" of the Zygan. Oneirites cannot survive for more than a few moments outside of the Dreamlands, and will wither, age and die within seconds.

Natural Resources

One of the most common reasons to visit the Dreamlands on purpose is for the harvest and acquisition of ectoplasm. While no current industrial scale operation exists for it, Oneiromancers will often come to treat with the Oneirites, providing luxury goods or strange services in exchange for ingots and jars of ectoplasm.
