Dragon Wasps

Not that I would ever disparage one as esteemed as Vespidaethar, but at some point there is a transition from "stinging insect" to "imminent threat to civilization."

Excerpt from the journal of Tilloth'tonogozonannoth

I can't prove anything of course, not trapped as I am, but I think that part of what inspired Vespi to create the dragon wasps was the practice known as origami. To be able to take something like a piece of paper, or in the case of some elven cultures a large leaf, and carefully fold it as to make a tiny, intricate sculpture is truly one of the under appreciated art forms across the planes. I have heard told that Mab has a collection of thousands of unique pieces.   Indeed the first "wasps" encountered in her domain were likely dragon scales, folded and animated to fly and attack intruders, but like all of her kind she has iterated and improved. Once again almost that I am putting here beyond physical description is mere speculation, for while a passing adventuring party was able to provide me with a single specimen it was unfortunately dead and somewhat decayed.   Specimen 4392 (Insect 711) Dragon Wasp (deceased)
Length (measured mandible to stinger):8 5/16 inches
Stinger Length: 5/16 inch
Wingspan: 14 1/4 inches
Weight: 1.1 lbs   Exoskeleton shows properties consistent with dragon scales. Body, to include wings, is fireproof to temperatures up to what is found in a typical cooking fire. Stinger is able to scratch steel and mythril, but not adamantite. With only a single, compromised specimen I am unwilling to test the force required to crush the exoskeleton, but theorize that it is at least one order of magnitude greater than that required to crush an aquatic lobster of equivalent size.   Behavior was described as "intelligently aggressive" by the parties wizard, to which their fighter promptly added "bastards go for the eyes, just like those damn hamsters, but worse because they fly." Of course, if the wasps are indeed a product of Vespidaethar's magic and they (the adventurers) were in her domain the aggression is likely territorial in nature.   As to the how of this creatures creation, I speculate it is a convergence of two separate research projects. There are well documented cases of gigantism throughout nature and magic has proven more than capable of allowing a creature to overcome the square-cube law. The goal of one experiment, I suspect, was to breed a magically giant wasp. An elder dragon such as Vespidaethar would live in an area in which the ambient aether is more than capable of supporting such a lifeform one produced. The second step would be finding a way to incorporate dragon scales into the diets of the larval wasps such that in the metamorphosis in the pupae stage the substance is deposited in the exoskeleton, molding a single "scale" likely with an internal support structure reinforcing its durability although said durability may be exaggerated, as our only source is a single group of adventurers.   There is also a possibility that each wasp is individually made by The Wasp Dragon. This process, I imagine, would involve somehow liquifying a dragon scale and injecting it into a local wasp pupae early on in the stage, with the wasps extreme size due to the extra supply of material and nutrients this no doubt would provide.

I second Dimi's comment and also. Dragon Wasps.   Nope. They somewhat fire proof? Guess we doing this with acid or electricity or extreme cold. One way or another that needs to cease to be. Absolutely not.   Because of the above, I kind of love them. Well done

Yea, they are loveably terrifying. I'm glad you enjoyed the read.

I love how you've chosen to write this artile as (yes, a journal) almost like a research paper. It makes my academic heart happy.   Not that I want to come across a dragon wasp, though. Alive or dead.
