Flying Jackalope

The good news is that we have the word of Mab that the fugitive wizard Kurtas Echo will no longer be creating Chimera. The bad news is several of the cages in his tower were forced open from the inside, including all those in the wing labeled "flying jackalopes"

Excerpt from the journal of Tilloth'tonogozonannoth

Ah, another excellent example of the subpar work of Kurtas Echo. Not that the man is not a genius in his own right, but compared to the works of some of my peers, well... he hasn't even been able to produce a singe non-sterile specimen. I shall have to see if someone is willing to try to get me a copy of his research notes, if they have not been destroyed.   Specimen 3156 (Chimera 44) Flying Jackalope (Anklebreaker)
Length: 25 in
Wingspan: 62 in
Weight: 12.4 lbs
The weight difference between jackalopes and jackrabbits of the same size is likely due to a combination of the horns, the thickened skull, and the strengthened spine (along with increase in size and density in the associated muscle groups). Overall weight would suggest an inability to fly without massive energy expenditure. However, like may creatures chimeric in origin it is likely that energy drawn from the aether allows for flight without the associated biological energy expenditure (see Notes on Dragon Flight). The wings appear to be from a bird of prey, although similar to griffons and manticores the bones in the wing are not hollow, giving them more durability than one would expect.   The addition of wings simply allows the Anklebreaker to kill its prey more rapidly, being able to go directly for a lethal blow to the head instead of first needing to disable its prey, something that has been noted already in native populations of the Myrdhor Jackalope where they can get a height advantage over their prey.

One thing that does fascinate me with mortal-crafted chimera, that is true here as well, is the near-seamless blend from feathers to fur, perhaps, the only area in which you have surpassed my demonic compatriots. It is, i think, a matter of magical blending vs soul grafting. It may be worth exploring if some combination of the two processes would yeild a natural-looking non-sterile chimera. Of course such experiments would likely rapidly turn the beauty I have come to appreciate here into the barren hellscape of my home, so it may be better is such avenues are not pursued

I like the little hints that there is a big different between mortal and demonic hybrid-making. A mixture of the two is definitely an idea left unexplored. The flying jackalope is kinda cute though!

Don't trust them, behind the cuteness lies the heart of a vicious hunter. (The jackalopes in my world may have taken inspiration from Monty Python and the Holy Grail)   As always thanks for the read, I'm glad you liked (and picked up on) the sprinkling of hints.

Oh very interesting looking hybrid. It does look like it could deal quite a punche.

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

They do indeed give the bonk to those unfortunate enough to meet them.

I love this adorable little terror, and I liked that the article took on a character voice while still being informative! The in-world answer to energy expenditure and the theorizing about different methods also made the craft seem that much more like a science, it made my mind buzz with the in-world possibilities.

I'm glad that you liked it. Til is such a fun character to explore the world through and has become one of the favorites of my players.

I like that you went with a journal entry, it made it more interesting to read. When you mentioned the wings being stronger I was like, "yea, that would be a good idea if they were of the habit of headbutting each other," ha.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the style. Its fun to write as Til collecting his knowledge. Jackalopes are also fun, because it is a Monty Python inspired twist on an animal that is already a bit of a joke creation turned into folklore staple (depending on where you grew up).
