You think all Fae fit neatly into you 2 courts, oh you sweet child. You know less of the Fae realm than you do of the stars in the sky. Sit down and listen, and I will at least try to teach you enough to not get you killed. — Jasper Cameron, Leader of the Bronze Ravens
Most people are familiar with the 2 famous Fae courts, likely due to their connection to the Twilight Trade, there are more, likely that even I know about. Here I have recorded what I have been discovered, lost in these Undying Lands.
The Twin Courts
We will start where you are most familiar, the Court of Summer and the Court of Winter. Called most often The Twin Courts by others in the fae realms, their power is closly linked to the seasonal cycle of our world. As one court's powers and magic gain in strength the others fade, only to come back with the turning of the years.
They are also the "closest" Fae realms to ours, at least as much as such a term can be used. Being that they share The Fae Moon with our world.
The Summer Court
Titania, the Queen of Summer has quite possibly had the most contact with the races of our world and a more profound impact on our history than even some of the gods of this world. The gift of our calendar, some two thousand years past, or is it three now, I'm not quite sure. The spark that led to the creation of the Twilight Trade can also be traced back to the Summer Queen.
The Summer Court is, contrary to what most believe, the more mercurial and unpredictible of the two. Which makes sense, if anyone had bothered stop and think about it. The Twin Courts mirror the natural world. What season is more known for activity: the cold months and long nights of winter, or the warm weather and long days of summer. Similarly the summer court is more.... frivilous, living in the moment. The abundance of summer months makes them less cautious, and while they can be more welcoming, they are prone to mood swings, like a sudden summer storm.
The Winter Court
Slow and patient, eager to sieze on opprotunities presented, Mab and the other Fae of the WInter Court are often viewed as cruel. However, they are much more consistent and predictable than their Summer counterparts. That is not to say that they are safe, but there are markets on our world as dangerous, and at least Fae will keep their word.
Just like their namesake season, the Winter Court is patient, slow to act. Mab is more known for her vengence, but that is because she doesnt forget. While a slight to the summer court is often forgiven the next time the season comes around, a insult to Winter is never forgotten, like leaf frozen in glacial ice.
Also be warned, an insult or attack on a single member of the winter court is considered an attack on all. This may be why winter is known for revenge. It is not swift, but the wrath of winter is as certain as snow and cold slowly gripping the land. However, a favor given to Winter is always remembered.
Court of Balance
There are two other seasons, one will note. While often thought of as seperate, they are represented by a single Fae Court, the Court of Balance. Keeping the balance between Summer and Winter, ensuring that as power waxes and wanes between the two, nothing too drastic happens.
Somewhat curiously the Court of Balance, while small, represents perhaps some of the most powerful fae individuals that I have ever encountered. They are often described by both other fae and the longer lived races of our world as "down right human-like." No doubt this refers to their frentic level of activity, as they almost always are working on a project. They grow unusually focused on things, be it a magical project, the study of squirrel habbits through the seasons, or the history of the Ethereal Moon and its effects on magic rituals.
King Oberon is rather hands off, but will protect those of his court with all his might. Treating with Oberon's court can be more challenging. The wild rutting of fall, the protectiveness of a new parent with their cubs in spring. The best bet is to spark their curiousity, hoping to lure them in with the temptation of new knowledge or a song they have not yet heard.
Tír na nÓg and Mag Mell
The Undying Lands, Never Never Land, the Plane of Earthly Delights.... while it bears many names depending on its interactions with cultures around the world, almost all of these places are likely part of the Fae that is encompassd by the the court of Tír na nÓg and Mag Mell.
Unlike the Twin courts, simply passing through these realms is enough for some of their magic to rub off on you. Food that will extend your age, tales of children lost for decades only to return untouched by time, all such tales can all be traced to Tír na nÓg.
I will say, Tír na nÓg, if you can make it to the court, is possibly the most.... human of the courts. Their rules are more easily grasped by us, and one would find parallels to the great courts of our world. Merrymaking and the encouragement of the arts abound. They often accept gifts of song or poem as payment for favors asked. They laso are obsessed with games, be they of words or some other type. If you agree to play a game, be sure to define a definite ending, and make sure they declare the game over, make no assumptions on this.
Past the court one comes to the seas and islands of Mag Mell. Both are ruled over by the Brother Kings, Manannán mac Lir and the Dagda, though usually only one is in residence at a given time. The other can be found with the Wild Hunt, always in the vanguard, if not always in the lead.
The border of this realm, at least on the side of Mag Mell. The Symplegades mark the edge. Some claim these islands are living creatures, others that they follow the will of Manannán mac Lir. Few have made it past the Symplegades intact, and of those that have, only Manannán has come back giving no little credence to the rumors he controls the islands. I have not gotten Manannán to tell me of his journeys. Acording to rumors, beyond lies either the dragon palace of Ryūgū-jō, the land of Lemuria, or other darker places.
There are other courts, but I have not yet had the privelege of visiting them, and wouldn't dare risk misrepresenting them. The Twilight Council, Ryūgū-jō, Takama-ga-hara ar the ones I have met travelers from and know to exist. One day, I hope to expand this to include information on all of them, after my accidental stay in Tír na nÓg it seems I have the time.
Oh this makes for a glorious morning. Titania, Mab, Oberon, and much more. Love the call out to Summer being unpredictable and winter being slow and patient. Just a great article.
I'm always a bit hesitant with things where I feel I'm pulling heavily from some of my favorite media (in this cast The Dresden Files). Still with this I think I managed to put enough of my own spin on it, and there are plenty of other mentions of the Fae courts that it is a fun space to world build in with plenty of room for a tweak here and a change there. I'm glad you liked it.
Agreed its hard to not touch on these things especially with famous topics like this. However by touching on it you can now branch as you will. Happy world building.
