The Fugue
The Fugue is an omnipresent fact of life and death on Korres. In short it describes the fact that souls cannot pass into the beyond when on the dayside of the planet.
This results in the souls of the dead wandering and quickly forgetting their identity and can become a danger for the people around them. Strong personalities can often remain in control for longer, but most will have lost any semblance of identity within a few days. Indeed, the only known way for a soul to pass from this plane is for it to reach the nightside or experience an eclipse. The latter are luckily regular enough in appearance, so that the world is not covered in the souls of the dead.
Knowing that this is the fate for anyone along death has resulted in several special cultural practices to cope with it.
Most cities will have a house of the lost, a place where the souls are locked within Rimestone rooms and tended to by priests awaiting the next eclipse.
People whose souls, often called spectres, shades or similar, who were not brought to a house of the dead will wander the world, and have a tendency to aggregate in the BLACKLAKES .
