Dwarven Eschatology: The Afterlife
When dwarves die, the essence of their identity, their soul is transported to one of three locations. The location is based on how truly each dwarf lived up to dwarven principles, including courage, clan loyalty, and craftsmanship.
The Great Hall
The Hall of Revelations
The Hall of Forging
The Great Hall
The Great Hall is where all dwarves who have lived noble and respectable lives and have done proud by their ancestors arrive and spend a millennium. The Great Hall is filled with a large hearth and endless kegs of the finest ale from Moradin's cellar. Dwarves here, spend their time telling stories, singing songs, and laughing endlessly to the sounds of ethereal rhythms. They are surrounded by splendor, warmth, family, and peace.
The remaining two halls are equal in status but are different in purpose. They are both for dwarves who have fallen short of dwarven ideals while they lived. Dwarves who arrive in these halls are expected to contribute to the multiple dwarven civilizations throughout the realms in unique ways.
The Hall of Revelations
The souls of dwarves assigned to the Hall of Revelations spend their time reading and reflecting on the teachings of the ancient dwarves of old. Sages walk through the hall, instructing the souls on where they fell short and why. The resulting service is that they act as messengers to the living, attempting to guide, encourage, and correct them when necessary. This usually takes the form of visions, prophecies, dreams, and on occasion, the soul of the deceased dwarf returning to the mortal world.
The Hall of Forging
Dwarves have been assigned to this hall due to a great moral failure or have committed a crime against their family or clan. The souls of dwarves assigned to the Hall of Forging spend their moments forging and crafting weapons, armor, and other magical devices of all natures. The eternal fires of the forge burn away their guilt and eventually cleanses them of their wrongdoing. It is believed that every magical item that is found in the living world is a result of a dwarf who has created it in the Hall of Forging.
Note: Although all dwarves aspire for the Great Hall, there are those who openly resist the allure. It's certain that many dwarves have openly chosen to live in such a way as to end up in one of the 'Lesser Halls'.
