Session 19: To Boldy Jam

General Summary

18th Eleasis
As Rayne guides them into the spelljammer, they catch up with Silas, who has been struggling with the space travel some. While he remained on the Esmeraldas, Silas spent his time speaking with the captain and Bombaduc about Hugert. Excited about the prospect of rum and exploring more, Stefan and Sikander take off for parts unknown within when a company of Giff arrive, claiming the ship as their own. Leaving no room for negotiation, Rayne initiates the fight and he, Anya, Silas, Tal, and a flock of giant owls take out three of the four, sending the final one with a message from Lord Rayne that this is his ship. Going through the bodies, they find:
  • A tiny salt shaker in the form of a unicorn with “For Krun from Bon” inscribed on the bottom
  • 60 gold
  • Personal weaponry and stormtrooper-like armor (Rayne takes a Thunderbomb, musket, and greatsword)
Recognizing the need to dispose of the bodies, they attempt to magically send one off the dock, but it ends up floating out and away from them. While working on this dilemma, a group approaches from the Esmeraldas, with Tago Cross among them. Not waiting for the guys, Anya accosts him, pinning him to the wall and eventually binding him and leaving him in one of the storage rooms with Alarm set on the door.
While Anya dealt with Tago, Rayne took Silas (Stefan and Sikander happily drinking in the mess hall) and showed him around while heading to the bridge. He shares that he only has vague memories of piloting the ship. Moving around, Rayne takes a seat in the captain’s chair while Silas investigates one of the desks with an undulating crystal ball and a box with a couple of buttons. Pressing them, a map appears for Silas and Rayne to inspect, with a flashing hippo on their location. Continuing to investigate, Silas finds he can plot courses and adjust the map itself – just needs some practice. Anya finally enters, and is directed to the other desk, where she finds the mummified head of an ancient elf on a stand. The sight of it is not what rattles her, but that it begins to speak. Rayne comes over to help explain this is entity is how they communicate and run the ship. The head introduces himself by many names, with Rayne settling on Arynx, then informed Rayne the ship was low on fuel, a certain type of crystal, and that there may be some below deck.
Leaving Anya and Tal on the bridge, the pair take off to go searching. While they are gone, Anya slowly grows more comfortable with the elf head and learns more about his creation and enslavement by the Dreignor, that once the adventurers grafted him onto the ship, his soul came along for the ride, and his name in life had been Locaster. He explains his purpose is as an information interpretation station and still to be of service. Her vows as a Sentinel kicking in, Anya’s fears shifts, and she promises to do what she can to take care of the ship.
Rayne and Silas return to the loading dock, as Rayne hoped to speak with the dead Giff. He learns the Giff is in the Underworld Kathon, that the ship runs on Corbamite, and that there is spare fuel in the hold. He also learns where the fuel goes and how to add it to the manifold safely. Once finished, he turns to Silas, and asks him not to tell Anya they spoke with the dead Giff, Silas agrees but is freaking out, wanting to know if Rayne is evil. He explains that his power is coming from somewhere else, not Talos, but regardless of that, he is in full control of himself, then shows Silas the sword that has a small about of taint visible. Silas accepts this and says, “As someone who is holding darkness within at bay, I am drawing inspiration from you as we strive toward the light.”
Following Rayne toward the hold, Silas stops when he hears the dead Giff whisper his name. Turning back, he asks how the dead knows his name, then hears, “The Gloaming comes for you.”
Silas falls on top of the Giff, tears of frustration fall down his face as he bangs his head on its chest, demanding to know what it meant. After a few moments, he rises, kicks the Giff then follows Rayne.
Back on the bridge, Rayne, Silas, and Anya (Tal took to laying at her feet), see a bright flash as three Aasimar appear and stride toward the ship, indicating their intent to board the ship. Not waiting for them, Rayne talks Locaster through the correct launch sequence while Silas sets a course, and they taxi out of the dock. Heading out over the city, they narrowly avoid the massive statue of Selune, sending Sikander and Stefan bouncing around the galley. Leaving the moon behind, the ship slows to coast among the stars. Once they come to rest, Anya and Tal head down to speak with Tago, hoping he has a way to communicate with the others on The Esmeraldas. Heading back down, the halls remind her strongly of the Eldathan shrines Zefor she’d encountered years earlier. Locaster opens doors for her as he can but is still limited due to missing data. Arriving at the room, she is ambushed by Tago, with a knife to her throat. Frustrated, she misty steps away and attacks him in return, after which they reach a tense truce. Their disdain for each other is obvious and Tago eventually shares a partial truth that he bears a mark that will reach the pirates, but that he needs access to the comm systems. She threatens to take his hand and leave him here but is unable to act on it as Tago manages to escape both Anya and Tal.
While Tago takes off and disappears down the hall, a portal opens in the hold and large metal creature made of Giff armor enters, attacking Silas and Rayne, drawing Anya and Tal their direction to help fight. Silas attempts to persuade it, but is unsuccessful and a full fight breaks out.
