Session 52: Oh That Was a Twist...
General Summary
As the fight with the Shree on the steps continues, a few items of note occur, including Neladrie shooting Sikander in the ass, Silas being charmed into attacking Neladrie, Silas getting off some powerful hits with Psychic Scream, and eventually two newcomers join the fight in the form of Clover the Wood Elf and Selle the Tielfing. Clover rounds out the fight summoning a rhino to charge the final monster.
As they gather, the new pair explains they’ve just escaped from the Dragontooth Step Castle. Silas explains The Cherry Smashers goal is to deal with the God Eaters while rescuing his twin sister Samyra from the clutches of Lord Mirt.
Agreeing to travel and work together, the party helps arm Clover and Sille and begin heading out, with Offa riding the rhino down the path to the base of the mountain. Finding a divergence, they stop to discuss the next path forward. While Silas checks with Sense and Clover works to detect the best way forward, the moon elf has a shift in personality and now seems to be called Anya. Tal the Blink Dog appears much happier with this change as do Silas, Sikander, and Offa. Selle and Clover are notably and understandably confused, with Selle offering to restore Anya. She explains she has been “not herself” and describes her last fuzzy memories from several days prior, declining his offer.
Continuing on, they cross the “Pit of Sadness” with some difficulty, including Selle and Clover fighting exhaustion from the miasma. Finally navigating across one of the explosions sends an amulet from Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto shooting out. They work out she is a goddess of the moon and connect that this castle was originally sacred to the goddess of the moon and may have been built by her son.
Approaching the edge of the woods, the dangerous black sand extends to the edge of a lava lake. On the far side, the castle is visible, seemingly locked in place on the side of the mountain, with everything about it appearing off. The party spends time trying to decide on the best way forward as something gets closer as they experience a momentary vertigo as there is a psychological roar.
Debating between returning to the prison and working up that way and using the barges, Offa surprises them all by going invisible, flying out and landing on the barge. They watch as he disappears below.
The stone praying mantis constructs, apparently made of jade, guide the barge through and up into a dock area, full of other creatures, including massive Oni with whips.
Returning, he shares all he saw and after another roar, Anya quickly summons giant owls and they quickly either turn invisible, cast Darkness, or hide in the feathers while they are flown over. The heat becomes unbearable, prompting Sikander, Selle, and Clover to drop down, taking some damage. Meanwhile, Anya and Tal blink down and Offa and Silas feather fall, having a pleasant chat as they do.
With Darkness still up, they attempt to hide so the jade praying mantis will continue to run the barge, but the kind of clicking sounds like they are nervous and don’t want to continue. Clover, concerned they are going to attack the party, ends up killing one of them. Silas manages to control the barge with its staff while Offa attempts to put the remaining creatures at ease.
Eventually they start to rise out of the lava, looking about for a safe place to disembark and figure out their next steps.
