You heard about the Red Blinder, the Batfiend Mushroom, the Silver Glowcap or the Golden Embrace Mushroom, but do you know that Dwarves just love stew and sweets and some kind of salad? Yes, salad. Not just green leaves, but also carrots, beets, wild mushrooms, potatoes and caterpillar-like beetles. And they can bake a really filling and tasteful bread which is also used as travel rations.
It really depends which one of the dwarven clans one is visiting, but their sort of grain varies and so their bread as well. One can notice that in the starters of each larger meal: wheat, spelt, oat, grey bread, name it. There is also their travel bread which is entirely made out of grain without baking powder or other ingridients. It is durable, tasteful and fills even the hungriest stomach for a long time. It is also used as a starter in prepped meals, just to get the body hunger for more.
As stated above, dwarves do eat salad as starters. They like beets and carrots with a bit of meat - chicken or hare is always a good choice - and a good dip. Radishes, tomatoes, all kinds of berries, grapes and onions.
Mushrooms can be a starter with salad, but most of the shroomies are used in the main courses as in stews, but we are getting to that. They also use some kind of hummus made out of peas and mushrooms, which results in very interesting and tasty combinations.
Only bread or salad would be too easy, right? And what kind of honourable feast would it be without some sweet or spicy dips to your bread or salad? Right, not much of honour to find here.
Basically most spicy dips to salads have something from the Red Blinder in their recipe or as an alternative the dwarves use pepper or chili from the Pisocenian area. For their sweet dips they use cream or the caterpillar beetle mentioned above, grinded or cooked.
The main course. Hmmm, yes, the main course... oh wait, yes. Sorry. Most main courses are balanced around certain meat or a mushroom, be it the famous mushroom of every clan, a normal harvested shroomy or meat. Imported, exported, raised in the dark, it doesn't matter. Cow, goat, large insects grilled or cooked, yummy.
Ever had a tunnelstalker gratin? No? Oh, you are in for a treat. It is basically the tunnelstalker cooked in their own shell, filled with all kinds of meat, sauce, beets and whatnot and then slow-cooked for two hours.
But dwarves love a good stew. With grains, meat, shrooms, a bit spice and a lot of beets, cooked for hours, rich with flavour and texture. Or did I mention porridge with goat milk? Sometimes even fermented? Humans might shudder, but it is a treat.
But lets not forget the dumplings. Dwarves cherish their dumplings, even when they are not made with the mushroom their clan is famous for. Dumplings with mead, with salad, with a mix, with nuts, spicy, sweet, a mix of both, sometimes even with a bit of trippy mushrooms for a feast or sweet dumplings as kind of dessert-main-course-mixture.
Uhm, desserts... yeah, dessert is a good thing. Creams, cakes, cookies, pie, sometimes even pudding. And the Magmakin dwarves have some kind of spicy jelly for their desserts, which is really neat, spicy and wobbly. They do not say what it is and don't export it, but if you can get it, do not hesitate.
Besides that they love their cookies and small pastries you can eat with one hand so you have the other hand free for drinks. And what is a feast without goatmilk, mead, liquour and strong whisky? Right. And you can craft your desserts with it and it is giving them extra flavour. Ever had goat pie? It is basically an apple pie with goat milk and it gives a really nice flavour and texture.
