Meritocratic Clans
The Äklo have formalized the giant "ordering" or Schwiedöu among themselves. A strong warrior or capable leader will emerge in society and they will be formalized as the founder of a new clan. Their extended family - including in-laws, brothers, cousins, uncles/aunts, and children/grandchilgren - become members of this clan. The Clan, then, has status and authority as long as the sitting clan leader is capable. When the clan's leader isn't capable, the clan loses status, until another member arises and founds a new clan. In this way, clans die and are reborn constantly, with the most capable leaders rising to the top.
Within this structure, though the clan leader (called a "Sirtuwasdt") has authority, it is granted authority from the rest of the clan. They rule, but only do so by acclaimation. When they become foolish or incapable, their commands are ignored.
