Elaina Varel

Elaina Varel is a current member of the Guardians of the North adventuring party. Found at the age of 16 by the Northern Guardians while her family were being accosted by a number of Imperial Redshields and an Imperial Blackcloak. On the failure to leave the house by the Blackcloak, the wizard set fire to the building. Elaina and her parents were brought outside, and her parents were summarily executed in front of her before the Northern Guardians stepped in and kill all of the Imperial officials present. Elaina was taken in and eventually joined the party as a full-fledged member.
It's not widely known except to a select few and Elaina herself, but she was adopted at a young age by her parents. She doesn't know her biological family at all, and only states her mother spoke of her father as a powerful sorcerer, which is where Elaina believes she derives her powers. Elaina has an innate power over the arcane, but chooses to pursue her skills in a scholarly manner, studying as a Wizard.
Elaina is a genuine and caring individual who wants the best for the world, and hopes to live up to the legend of adventuring parties such as The Glade Guardians or her personal favorite The Skywatchers. Elaina lets her emotions get the better of her, but with the guidance of her fellow adventurers she is learning to quickly overcome raw emotion and prefer logical responses.
For her age and lack of classical training, Elena's progression into mastering the arcane is nearly unheard of. From what she knows, her powers manifested when she was 10 years old and in just 16 years she can cast spells classified at the third level of power, which many college wizards are unable to do upon graduation. Several powers of the Korrisian Space have taken a keen interest in Elaina, and wish to utilize her power, but the Northern Guardians work tirelessly to ensure she stays with them.

It was discovered by the Heroes of Yarrin that Elaina is the bastard child of the Archlich and Deity of Secrets Vecna. During his time as a mortal, after the Dead Three had launched their coup across the Multiverse, Vecna had found love in a mortal woman and conceived a child. Knowing the child would seek to follow him and learn from him, he fled. Elaina was told the truth when Edmar and Geneva confronted one another on the roof of a building in which Edmar sought to speak with Vecna about the situation of Elaina not knowing her parentage. Because of Vecna and Edmar, Elaina learned the truth of her father.
Elaina did not seek to follow in her father's footsteps, and avoid all influence from him until she was killed battling Captain Clarice Salvadore of the Sapphire Serpent. In a last-ditch attempt to scorn her former crewmate and Northern Guardian Aquila, Captain Salvadore unleashed a devastating disintegration spell, killing Elaina instantly. After sacrificing herself, Captain Relda was able to bestow the power upon Geneva Softheart to restore Elaina to life. Elaina returned just as she was before her death, but in her time away she had spoken with her Father and accepted his power and now wields the Eye of Vecna.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Currently the two features of Elaina that make her easily identifiable is firstly, the scar on her chin from a Githyanki Greatsword striking her across the face, knocking her unconscious.
The second identifying feature is that her eyes do not match. Her right eye is an icy-crystal blue while her left eye is a sickly green. Around the green eye the skin seems to have darkened, and small cracks of black spread.

Apparel & Accessories

Elaina tends to dress modestly and comfortably, generally preferring common traveling clothes such as a shirt, surcoat, heavy cloak, long pants, and boots for the many days of travel she has become accustomed to. After so many times being wounded, she sought training in armor from a member of her adventuring party, Edmar Slaak, which has led to Elaina now wearing a breastplate under her surcoat along with pauldrons.

Personal history

Elaina Varel was born during a particularly sinister evening, with nothing lighting the area but the sickly green color of Morrslieb, one of Korrisia's two moons. She was born to an unknown woman on farmland in the once great Kingdom of Keoland. Much of her early life is a blur, and unknown.
After being taken from her mother, Elaina was adopted by two merchants in the Kingdom of Arcanum, as young as three she impressed her adoptive parents by already having a skill with the arcane. It was her parents' hope that she would be accepted to the Calemdarian College of Magic, and would one day become a great wizard captable of affecting meaningful change to the world. This hope was dashed with the coming of the Overlord. With new restrictions placed on magic, her parents refused to send her to become indoctrinated into the Empire's College, and become another Blackcloak, terrorizing the people of the world, and stealing children from their parents for showing the slightest interest in magic. 
Elaina was moved around quite often due to her parents' line of work, but she was exposed to a great many different people of Korrisia. While under the iron fist of the Overlord, life was heavily changed but her parents sought to make it as enjoyable as possible for the young prodigy. Elaina was permitted to practice magic in only very secure locations, but it was this that would lead to the death of her family. 
Elaina and her parents were nearby a village when it was sacked by bandits. In the hopes of finding and rescuing anyone, they explored the now razed village only for a bandit to rush from a home and attack. Elaina, in a panic, used her magic to protect her parents and burned the Bandit to ash. Some of the surviving villagers witnessed this and, unfortunately used it to their advantage, turning Elaina in to the Blackcloaks for a measly pile of silver. Elaina and her parents were discovered days later by a Blackcloak, who demanded that Elaina be remanded to his custody. After refusing, and barricading themselves in a house, the Blackcloak set the house ablaze to force them out. In front of Elaina, the Blackcloak executed her parents, her whole life crumbled around her in an instant. A group of mercenaries working for the Empire known as the Guardians of the North witnessed this cruelty, and murdered the Blackcloak along with his escorts in cold blood, saving young Elaina. 
Elaina has traveled with the Northern Guardians ever since, and her only family is made up of this group of misfits and exiles.

Education

Elaina's magical education is entirely self-taught, along with moments of education from external forces. Members of the Northern Guardians have attempted to assist in her education, but it's clear that Elaina is naturally far more advanced in the arcane arts as a wizard. 
Elaina's skill is to the point that she would have graduated years early as a college-trained wizard, and would be well on her way to the seat as a Matriarch of one of the Orders, perhaps even Supreme Matriarch.

Employment

Elaina has held no real job accept as a member of the adventuring party the Guardians of the North. She is a full-fledged member and has been a part of the group for the majority of its inception.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Elaina has had several major accomplishments in her time as an adventurer. Thanks to her, many enemies that faced the Northern Guardians were vanquished. 
Elaina was one of the heroes who halted the Githyanki siege during the Third Siege of Bryn Shander, and fought gloriously in the city's defense.
Elaina was one of the bounty hunters who found and killed the dangerous pirate Clarice Salvadore.

Mental Trauma

Before the age of 18, Elaina has been killed twice. The first time she was nearly cut in half by a Frost Giant Chieftain, the second time she was completely disintegrated by a nemesis of the Northern Guardians, Captain Clarice Salvadore. This has weighed heavily on Elaina as she is far too young to have to cope with the idea of her mortality, even as an adventurer. It also impacts her heavily feeling that she is unable to stand her ground during conflict with her party, stopping her from being able to continue protecting her family. It was this that led to her making a deal with her father, and receiving his Eye.

Intellectual Characteristics

Elaina is supremely gifted and possesses a mental acuity of someone double or triple her age. She is able to understand and process anything in the realm of the arcane at a shockingly fast speed, and has even been known to re-invent already invented spells from thin air. She is able to memorize a vast amount of information, and is able to locate pieces of information quickly. This has shown to be both a blessing and a curse, for her emotional maturity struggles to keep the pace with her understanding of the world, leading her to crisis.

Morality & Philosophy

Elaina's primary goal is the safeguarding of her friends and family, the Northern Guardians. She believes that they are a necessary force in the world, and can lead the work back to a second Age of Heroes. She has been known to make dangerous plays in effort to protect her allies, which has even led to her death.
