The Everstone
The Everstone is an item of obscurity and myth in the lands of Korrisia. Few know of its existence, and even fewer have ever truly laid eyes on it. The Stone's history reaches back to the early days of Korrisia's formation, when the Twins still lived.
The creation of the Everstone itself is one of extreme debate. Many believe that the Everstone was one of the last creations that both Garenthar and Kormund had worked on together. One popular theory is that it is a simple remnant of pure magic when the Twins shattered the ancient crystals, freeing the winds of magic to flow about the planes. Another speculation is that it is a crystalised tear of the progenitor deity Garenthar after his brother's horrific betrayal. Where everyone agrees is that the Everstone is an item of such immense power, that it is truly not safe with anyone.
However the stone started, it has become an item of corruption and misery. Every few centuries the stone is rediscovered, only to be utilized in some fashion by spellcasters, often times to perform great deeds of benevolence. Perhaps a wizard wishes to craft a new powerful spell, a Druid wishes to cleanse an entire continent of corruption and rebuild nature itself, a Cleric wishes to free a wave of healing magic to wash over the world and eliminate a disease. Regardless of the intent, the Everstone refuses and often times twists the user terribly, and causes a malicious backfire of the attempted ritual often bringing the opposite or some unseen impact. The caster rarely survives long after, and the stone is once more lost in time.
On a mechanical note, it is believed that the Everstone does allow a user to bypass a rule set forth by the goddess of magic, Mystra, disallowing mortals from casting the most powerful of spells. A dark wizard was able to use the Everstone and bind over 2,000 souls to himself, permanently taking hold over an entire settlement, in which he could teleport the settlement wherever he chose, and lure more victims into his grasp. This wizard was slain by a group of unknown adventurers, and the stone was once again lost.
There is currently no known method to destroy the stone. There is a documented case in which a Calemdarian Mage Lord of the Abjuration College attempted to Wish the stone out of existence, it somehow deflected the raw, fate-binding magic back into the caster, removing him body and soul.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The Everstone is progenitor divine will manifested into physical form. It is a casing of pure magic. Originally, the Everstone could be wielded for benevolent means, but this has been perverted by beings of evil. After the Twins' deaths, the Gods sought to safeguard the Everstone to ensure that it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands, and could be used to continue Garenthar's good work.
One of Kormunds Underlords, Sul Khatesh got to the Everstone first. Knowing that both she and the stone were hunted by the gods, she poured an ounce of her own essence, the essence of Kormund into the Everstone, which forever tainted the holy relic. By the time the gods found Sul Khatesh and the Everstone, her work had been completed. She was locked away knowing that the gods would forever suffer knowing they could not feasibly possess the Everstone without fear of its corrupting powers. Ioun and Mystra together were able to place an enchantment on the stone, that it would never stay in one place for long. This coupled with how corrupted and power-hungry the Stone has become, it will often slay its wielder soon after being discovered.
Significance
The Everstone has been a part of Korrisian History since before history was truly documented. Some of the greatest magical occurrences ranging from magnificent to cataclysmic have occurred with the Everstone at the center of the ritual.
1. Sul Khatesh is inspired by the character of the same name from Wizards of the Coast's Eberron, Rising from the Last War 5th edition campaign guide.
2. The deities mentioned within: Ioun and Mystra are part of Forgotten Realms' pantheon adapted to Korrisia
3. The Progenitor Deities Kormund and Garenthar are entirely homebrew.
Rarity
The Everstone is beyond rarity, it is the only one of its kind. The idea of having another is unthinkable, the immense power stored inside of the single Everstone is more than enough to wreak havoc on a planar scale.
