Korsamu
In the time of the Spirit War, a group of mortal invokers led by Nu, used the power of the Obelisks to become immortal beings of immense power. Declaring themselves the new gods, these "Korsamu" imprisoned the spirits and the Maruthar (now called the Old Gods) in the newly created Otherworld and implemented a cycle of birth and death to bring order to Koru. They forbade using Old Magic to create new life and the korormu Belen created the animals of Koru to serve as vessels for excess shades. Living beings, now referred to as Mortals, were given finite lifespans, but their fecundity was increased allowing them to easily have children. After death, mortals' spirits were to be ferried to the Otherworld by Nu's daughter, Kuru, where they dwell for a time before being ferried back by Kuru's twin sister, Kara, to be reborn in a different mortal vessel. It is unknown if the form is random or based on some judgment by the Korsamu. No apparent system for deciding the starting details of a spirit’s next incarnation exists, leading many to believe that the form and situation is random. Two things are known, however. First, those who followed Siyr, Nu's renegade daughter, are banished to Shomor. Second, spirits who were closely linked in their previous life, either in love or in hate, tend to be reborn near to each other in the next (although the species may vary).
