Session 54 - Tying Things Up in Rheo
General Summary
It is the following day! Rheo is in full swing, everyone’s debating and pursuing knowledge. Ionessa is catching up with Axiokeanos about the goings on in Oiakis, Kestor is fixing himself up in front of the mirror to match his new reputation, Xanthos is plotting over a map of Sideris, Neo is fiddling with his staff and nervously completing his morning prayers. We talk to Silanos about how he ended up in the Panopticon. He was arrested for being drunk, then he and Jangles were charmed into attacking a third prisoner and were transferred suspiciously quickly, like as soon as the guards showed up. Someone could have cast a spell through the window. Silanos is kind of an asshole, he starts arguing with Xanthos.
Silanos says Parmenion had a unified evocation theory and Silanos embarrassed him in the agora, which led to the fight. We bring him up to speed on what’s going on and why we rescued him, and convince him to help put Parmenion back in his place. He tells us that Parmenion actually wrote him unhinged letters for years that are pretty embarrassing, maybe we can use those to discredit him. Jangles conveys in a man’s voice, “you will be brought in by our man inside, Medios, he’ll arrest you and put you in the same cell as the drunken fool and all you need do is ensure he is moved over to the window…we’ll take things from there, you’ll only be taken on a petty theft charge.” So Medios is an inside man at the jail, Jangles tries to describe the speaker, there’s swishing of cloth, a series of voices, “black robes human, not tall not short, old.”
We decide to head to Silanos’ to get the letters, then we’ll go to the Polemarch and explain what happened to get him and Jangles exonerated, then we will go to check on the rest of the Kenku. Silanos’ place is kind of a dump, musty, cramped, a bit of a mess. Silanos fetches a whole heap of scrolls that are clearly from Parmenion (even has his signature) addressed to Silanos arguing about the same universal evocation theory bolstered by insults from Parmenion, statements of how well he’s doing, and that he has spies in the city and knows Silanos is doing really poorly. It’s really funny and embarrassing, they also call Silanos a coward for not responding. Parmenion getting information is not illegal on its own, but he’s the leader of a different state and he’s now bidding for a political position in Rheo, so this should be brought to the Polemarch too.
Ionessa brings up that the moral thing to do here is bring this to Parmenion first and give him the opportunity to back down with dignity. We find him at the inn he is renting, and Ionessa confronts him about why he became so upset at Silanos specifically. He was basically so rude and uneducated that Parmenion couldn’t help it, and now he blames him for getting him exiled. Ionessa brings up the letters and Parmenion’s anger, and that he is working against the party’s goals of peace, and that we would rather he didn’t run for office. Parmenion interprets this as blackmail but Ionessa passes the persuasion check to avoid him throwing down.
He asks if we can find a middle ground. He believes with proper leadership, Rheo can be put in greater order. He wants to become Eponymous eventually, he just can’t run against Nicanda and win. As Polemarch he will command both navies, armies, and the minds of both nations to control the seas and have everyone working at his behest. Ionessa argues that he has not proven he is a good leader, he’s abandoned Limpani in its current chaotic state. He admits that it would not look good for him if Limpani was in a bad state. He can clean that up when he gets back though, and his ambition is to combine the minds of both nations to make them stronger than they could ever be alone. Ionessa argues that they should remain separate, their uniqueness is what makes them strong, and that he should spend time building up Limpani while spending some time in Rheo, and in time they will come.
Parmenion agrees but brings up the matter of the Rot. The fight against them would be much easier if there was one mind coordinating our defence, he knows there are agents of the Rot who have infiltrated Limpani that he is keeping an eye on. Ionessa argues that he should focus on fighting back against them there, and he agrees that would bolster his reputation if he was seen as defeating those creatures. He says he’s willing to bow out, but he wants the letters destroyed. We agree to convince Silanos to give them up. He also wants us to keep him in the loop about any information relating to the threat of the Rot, and he wants to be included in any future conclaves. We agree to keep him in the loop and invite him to FUTURE conclaves.
Kestor apologizes for what he said to Parmenion when they first met, that he was drunk and upset and angry, he was just trying to hurt people. He appreciates it, he still thinks he needs to get out of Rheo’s shadow but this doesn’t mean he has to take over Rheo. Kestor gives Parmenion a hard talk about how his methods are unacceptable, and that he needs to start behaving differently or it’s just doing to end with the party taking him down (rolled a 30!). We convince Silanos to let us keep the letters in exchange for a letter Kestor wrote to Eustathius in much the same manner. Kestor talks to the party about the art of hurting people’s feelings and everyone’s kind of weirded out even though he doesn’t do that anymore!
We go buy Neo a 1,000gp mirror for scrying, and diamond dust for Ionessa’s nondetection spell. Next we take Jangles and Silanos to go see Polemarch Brygos! Jangles is a little unsure, but we promise to have his back. Kestor rolls a 1 and a 2 to convince Brygos to take mercy on Silanos and Jangles and to hear their testimony. He still agrees but uses a zone of truth. They answer the questions truthfully, and Brygos lets them go under the condition that they stay in the city. We give Jangles our cottage address and we’ll let him know if the address changes.
We bring Jangles back to the other Kenku, and they’re super happy that he’s been saved. They also tell us that Pairairi made its presence known, though they only know this through omens. We ask how to defeat Pairairi, Chanter asks if its goal is noble, and Kestor thinks it is but its means of pursuing that cannot happen. Perhaps we could redirect it, Chanter says that if we find another way to achieve its goal (resurrecting Mourionos is my working theory) then it might start pursuing that other avenue instead, but we have to lead it there first. Chanter has heard of Kestor’s play, rumours have sprouted up over the years but she doesn’t know a whole lot about it. Kestor lets her know that Mourionos is mentioned in the play, she’ll look into it. She suggests looking into people who encountered it in the past, or other old entities who know of it. If the living who have encountered it are too insane, there are always the dead, either in the underworld or roaming the land.
Kestor brings up Rhene and how he’s struggling to fix her. Chanter suggests finding someone who can get through to her, and Kestor thinks of Arachnos and how he might be in the underworld! That’s where Rhene was, after all. Openings to the underworld exist in the material plane, but they move around or open under special circumstances (lots of people dying, could be random, worshipers of Ptourge completing great rituals) but there is always a way into the underworld so Nypoilita can guide shades there for the afterlife. It’s always a great hole in the earth, a chasm that brave heroes enter. It’s more than just underground, you are going through a portal to another realm.
Anyway we’ll probably do that at some point! We head to Parmenion to let him know we held up our end of the deal. On the way we question Xanthos about his cursed ring, he doesn’t want to take it off because it makes him super powerful but oops it’s also making him crave red meat and his teeth are all turning into shark teeth! We remove curse and get rid of it, into the bag of holding it goes, sorry Xanthos. We tell Parmenion what’s up, we keep the letters and he will back down from his election campaign.
We go out for a fancy dinner and a play that night! Xanthos is asking Kestor questions, and Kestor dissociates and sees Arachnos for a moment, but he comes back and starts answering questions.
The end.
