Session 7 - Becoming Parents
General Summary
We have escaped the kraken, we have to warn the surrounding ports! But first thing’s first, this oyster… Aga whips out the identify spell and learns the command word to open it, it’s the celestial word for “birth”. This disables the magical seal, and Xanthos is able to pry it open. Inside is a baby! A merfolk baby! It’s crying, very upset at being brought into the world, but it is calmed by a lullaby. We’re parents now! We name it Pearl!
Next up: big shark and harpies. Neo is charmed and jumps into the sea, that’s where the shark is! We do battle but win out, killing the shark and downing two out of three harpies. The final harpy begs for mercy and offers blessings of the monsters if we spare them. We do!
We arrive in Iroa, there are leeches there who want us to let them bard for us so they can benefit from the riches and benefits the leader of the city would bestow upon us. Xanthos, Aga, and Kestor go to tell a leader of the city about the kraken. Ionessa and Neo go to the temple of Thalakyma to learn about the baby.
We speak to Iros, Demarchos of House Iroa, who is kind of insane, can tell if anyone’s lying to him, and loves heroes. Kestor’s nemesis, Tidas, is there and tries to outdo him, but Kestor wins out. We warn Iros of the danger of the kraken and he’s over the moon about it, he immediately tries to enlist us in his kraken killing squad but we decline, so he starts recruiting anyone else who will sign up.
Neo casts Augury to ask whether leaving Pearl in the possession of the Temple of Thalakyma would be a good idea, and receives a mixed result (weal and woe). They enter the temple, meeting Priestess Niobe, and explain the Pearl situation. She asks to hold the baby, which rings some alarm bells, but Neo thinks she is curious rather than malicious. They hand Pearl over, and Niobe says she wants to perform some tests, make some sacrifices, learn more about exactly what sort of an omen Pearl is. Ionessa makes her give Pearl back.
Neo floats the idea of having Thalakyma speak directly, having the gods speak through him. Niobe is skeptical but permits him to try. Neo beseeches Thalakyma to speak through him, but he does not receive an answer. Niobe still thinks she should take the child, but Ionessa gets the impression that it will only be okay if Pearl isn’t associated with monsters. Ionessa and Neo discuss Neo’s powers and whether either of them know how to raise a child. Neo’s family raised children in a communal sense, though he only really knows how to be an older brother. He reveals he doesn’t actually know how he became a part of that family, his parents would never give him a straight answer. Maybe he was found just like Pearl?
We return to the boat, Kestor explains what happened in his (and Aga & Ionessa’s) minisession and who Tidas is along the way. During the night, a harpy appears and bequeaths upon us an amulet of the claw for sparing her sisters!
