Rattar

All decent folk find the common rat repulsive. Harbinger of disease, it scavenges on our waste-heaps and frightens our children. How immeasurably worse then is the foul rattar--standing on its hindlegs in foul parody of a human. Rats as tall as man, and blessed with the most vile intellect and cunning. Basic Information

Anatomy

Rattar are bipedal rat-like humanoids, standing usually under five feet tall (although depending on social status and diet can grow to over six). Dark furred, with a long, naked tail. Slender and agile, with dexterous clawed hands, and a pointed face full of yellow incisors.

Genetics and Reproduction

A highly fecund race, breeding females can give birth to litters of 3-6 rattar young after a 3 month gestation.

Growth Rate & Stages

Rattar reach maturity quickly, but live fairly short lives. A rattar is considered an adult by the age of 3 and rarely live past 30.

Ecology and Habitats

Rattar dig labyrinthine warrens, usually beneath the settlements of surface-dwelling humanoids. They scavenge food and supplies from their unwitting neighbours, and will attack and eat those humanoids if the chance arises.

Dietary Needs and Habits

True omnivores, rattar scavenge waste and carrion, predate sapient and non-sapient creatures alike, and steal and pillage from other races.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Born in tunnels under human settlements, rattar are highly adapted for dark conditions. Darkvision 60 ft.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Rattar names are like their screeching language: harsh sounds, with many sibilants and hard consonants. They may use clan identifiers, and take menacing titles as they gain status.

Gender Ideals

As a species reliant on rapid birth rates to counter high mortality, females are most often treated as little more than breeder slaves. When a female rattar overcomes this lowly station to rise through the ranks, she is therefore likely to be very formidable indeed.

History

Jaxhyde, in his light and grace, did not create the human race with the ability to navigate the dark of the night. They traveled and worked in the daylight hours and the night was for rest, safe in their homes and by their fires. But there are places beneath the bright human settlements that are always in shadow. Caves, tunnels, and caverns, which the sun does not light, a darkness that fires and torches cannot pierce. Humans had an inherent fear of these dark places, and that fear preyed on them, gnawed at their souls, and became manifest.   The Gnawing Dark stalks those tunnels now, a creeping, prowling entity of primordial fear and unending hunger. It crouches in the shadows beyond human lights, watching, waiting, picking off those foolhardy enough to venture beyond the safety of the torches.   And in time, so too would its children would begin to claw and bite at the edges and roots of civilisation. The rattar skitter and scurry like shadows flit before a candle, a growing horde of insidious, hateful rat-kin, a rising tide of parasitic vermin.
