Translator Orbs
The Mercenaries of the Kingdom of Mentia fight the battles of others, wanting for nothing except gold and renown.
Translator Orbs are tools carried by those known as the Revenants. They are elite units that march alongside the camp followers in the wake of battle, scouring the fields for the dying. They collect the final requests and thoughts of allies and enemies alike, translating it into the mother tongue of the user.
The purpose of these Orbs is to act both as a translator, and as a tool to later recount the spoken thoughts of the fallen. Revenants, much like many of the other mercenaries are fairly indifferent towards both sides of a conflict, and so will treat both with an equal measure. Due to the importance of these messages, the maintenance and protection of these orbs is paramount, until the message within can be made manifest. Despite the personal intimacy between the revenant and the fallen, there are many attempts at bribing them for these messages, to be used as information. However, this is considered a grave insult by most, who will often end their contract there.
The Orbs are a transparent glass, roughly the size of a small watermelon. As the final requests fill the glass, the glass becomes fogged, the words spoken absorbed into the orb like a smoke, swirling until it becomes settled, fully translated. They are a single use item, allowing for a maximum of ninety seconds before closing completely. The process of translation takes nearly five minutes on average, though the shorter requests are processed far quicker. Each Orb has five charges. The first three allow the message to be replayed without any complications. However, after the third time the message becomes far less comprehensible, as the words and magic fades. After the last charge, the orb shatters, and is discarded.
