Marriage

Marriage is a common occurance in Krea, though varies greatly between the countries. Below you can find more information on how marriage is celebrated.

Family Names

Family names can be created or changed if you are starting a new family with someone, however in those cases people generally do so if neither parent has a family name the two are marrying into or they are separating into a new branch family.   People inherit the last name of the family they marry into. This means there's no precedence on the female or male taking on the other's last name, instead they keep the name of the family. In the case of both of them not inheriting the family name, they will change their last names to something new.

Customs

Dessiara
Polygamy is legal in Dessiara, and the Royalty often partake in it.   When nobles in Dessiara get married, they share identical rings to show their connection. It doesn't matter which finger the ring is on, though each ring would be on a different finger. If someone happens to have more than 10 partners, they will start stacking rings (One on each phalanx). It is unexpected for someone to have more than 28 partners, though if they happen to do so, some might turn to toe rings.   These rings are never really that fancy with giant stones, and are more like metal bangs with engraving on them unique to the pair. They can have stones embedded in them, but generally nothing protruding.   You can choose who you want to have kids with in Dessiara, and it is your choice on who to marry, however marriages themselves are carried out only for nobility. Commoners instead will simply buy rings and live with one another.   Commoners can separate at any time and do not have to file for divorces, however nobility cannot divorce.   --------------------------------------------
Terramis
Polygamy is legal in Terramis, but uncommon, especially with more than 2 partners. The royals do not partake in it, though nobles oftentimes will. Commoners who participate will generally have their main wife, then a second wife.   Marriages are much like they are irl, anyone can get married to anyone, and when it comes to divorces a settlement is given where things are divided up between the two. In the case of nobility, however, where the one who married into the nobility is leaving the family and losing their title because of it, the amount divided is adjusted where they get less to avoid fraud, as long as evidence is given as to why this should occur. Unfortunately, because Polygamy is legal, cheating is not considered evidence in these cases...   When people in Terramis get married, they share a similar piece of jewelry with each other. This can be rings, necklaces, earrings, or even arm or leg bands. The jewelry doesn't have to be identical, but will use the same materials and look like part of a set. They can be the same type of jewelry, or different (One having a ring, the other a necklace).   --------------------------------------------
Opirium
Polygamy is not legal in Opirium.   You have to get married in order for your relationship to be recognized, however getting married is expensive to do so many people opt to just live together without getting married. However being married protects people in the case of fraud or proving things to province leaders, as well as supporting each other.   In the case of divorces, which are also expensive, the province leader decides how things are split, and looks over evidence.   If a family were to move to Opirium from another country and were in a polygamist relationship already, Opirium would honor it as long as proper documentation was had and they were all officially married already. If proper documentation is not had, Opirium will not honor it.   When people in Opirium get married, no visual jewelry or accessories are required unlike the other countries. Upon getting married, they have to pay a marriage tax (depending on the ceremony) and get a certificate that binds the two of them. People moving to the country who are already married don't have to pay the tax, but they do have to get the certificate. This can complicate things and make things expensive especially for people in already established polygamist relationships.   The certificate is kept with the province leader's paperwork and filed away. Because many commoners don't get officially married due to the cost, people generally don't ask for documentation or proof for their relationship unless issues arise.   --------------------------------------------
Wahvess
Polygamy isn't illegal in Wahvess but it is somewhat frowned upon and pretty uncommon.   Marriage, however, is only between two individuals, if a polygamist wants to bring another into their life they can, however they cannot get married if they already are. When getting married, the whole city celebrates with the couple unless they have it in private, which is uncommon to do.   Divorce is quick and painless and items are separated based on prior ownership and who paid for what.
