Dragon Orbs
Green - King Lorac tried to use the Green dragon orb to save his home, yet not being strong enough he has now trapped himself and the whole of Silvanesti in an unending nightmare.
White - The only info on the white dragon orb is that long ago it was taken far south to the winter landscape of Icewall, where it may still rest.
These legendary Orbs were first spoken of by Alhana Starbreeze, the elven princess of Silvanesti in Tarsis. She urged the Inquisition to aid her finding her father, who may have one in his possession.
Alhana spoke of one orb with Lorac, her fathers possession the speaker of the Stars in Silvanost. She wishes to head there soon
In the library in Tarsis, with the help of Alhana the heroes found a reference to magical crystal orbs created by the Wizards of High Sorcery in the Age of Dreams, housed for a while in the Towers before the Kingpriest of Istar declared those Towers to be unholy places. Of the five orbs that were created, only one is mentioned in the book as surviving, stolen from Wayreth by an elven wizard named Feal-Thas. Its last known location was far to the south of Tarsis, a region known now as Icewall Glacier. Sketchy directions to Icewall are also found.
Info on their past is tragic, The creation of the dragon orbs took place during the Age of Dreams, an age when wizards were respected and revered upon Krynn, and there were five Towers of High Sorcery. These Towers were centers of learning and of power for the mages of Krynn. They housed great libraries of spellbooks and magical artifacts, and all mages desiring to acquire mastery traveled to them to take the grueling Test. At the Towers, the mages came together to work their greatest magic.
Toward the end of the Third Dragon War, when the world itself seemed doomed, the highest of the mages of all three Orders (White, Red, and Black) met together in the greatest of the towers—the Tower of Palanthas—and created five dragon orbs to help defeat the wyrms. All but one of the orbs were taken from Palanthas and carried to each of the other four Towers. As Istar rose during the Age of Might to greater and greater glory, the Kingpriest of Istar and his clerics became increasingly jealous of the power of the mages.
As times grew more and more evil, the priests placed the blame for the evil upon the mages. The Towers of High Sorcery became natural targets. Mobs attacked the Towers and for only the second time in their history, the wizards of all the Orders came together to defend the last bastions of their strength. When it became clear that the battle was hopeless, the wizards themselves destroyed two of the Towers.
The blasts devastated the countryside for miles around. Only three Towers remained—the Tower of Istar, the Tower of Palanthas, and the Tower of Wayreth. The terrible destruction of the two Towers frightened the Kingpriest. He granted the wizards safe passage from the Towers of Istar and Palanthas. Now only 2 towers remain. The orbs were lost to time, until now
FATES OF THE ORBS
The locations and fates of each orb is hard to discover, but those with access to ancient knowledge may have the clues that can lead a party to each dragonorb. The hidden library in Tarsis, the Aesthetics in Palanthas, or any of the Elven Speakers will likely know something about at least one of the orbs, as will the Dragon Highlord FealThas, who has spent many long years studying them.
THE DALTIGOTH ORB BLACK
The black orb was taken to Daltigoth, the capital city of the ancient empire of Ergoth where it both remained until the empire of Istar began to wage it’s war against the Conclave of High Sorcery. It was believed that this orb was destroyed during an attack on the tower at Daltigoth. If not, then it was certainly buried or crushed when the tower in Daltigoth fell during the Cataclysm.
Rumours have persisted however that it may have survived. An Aesthetic of the Library of Palanthas named Carsus has researched the orbs and found many stories of individuals finding themselves with magical items that may secretly contain pieces of the shattered black dragonorb. These stories and rumours include:
• A ceremonial dagger with a small gem laid into it’s hilt, won by a trader in a poker game, was used to kill a Kapak in Tarsis. As the draconian dissolved into a pool of acid, the dagger was found remarkably undamaged. The merchant was then seen fleeing the city.
• A wooden Kagonesti amulet with an odd crystal embedded in it’s top has been passed down a family line to a young elf who claims that the amulet made him invisible to a black dragon after climbing a tree when his village was attacked. Supposedly he was then able to jump onto the black dragon and kill it with a single blow to the head. This young Kagonesti is still in Southern Ergoth, hiding like any of his people from Qualinesti and Silvanesti refugees.
• A gold ring with a three-crystal inset was given to an Istaran noblewoman shortly before the Cataclysm. She claimed to have had visions of her home being destroyed, and months after the Cataclysm she stumbled as a refugee into a village miles from her home, the town, having been destroyed by a flight of black dragons.
• A Knight of Solamnia named Devon Trevaar of Palanthas inherited a set of crystal-studded gauntlets and suddenly become smarter and more skilled as both a warrior and a strategist. The crystal studs were all of different sizes, and it was suggested that they were fragments of the black orb, eventually leading Trevaar to find other fragments in pieces of jewelry. These items will still be with his descendants.
THE LOSARCUM ORB BLUE
The blue orb was taken to the tower of Losarcum, the capital city of the ancient empire of Ergoth where it both remained until the empire of Istar began to wage it’s war against the Conclave of High Sorcery. It was believed that this orb was destroyed during an attack on the tower at Daltigoth, however in truth the orb was captured and taken back to Istar in secret.
There is remained in the Kingpriest’s treasure vault until the city was destroyed in the Cataclysm. After this, the blue dragonorb came into the possession of the wizard Zebulah who resides in the sunken Ruins of Istar beneath the Maelstrom.
THE WAYRETH ORB WHITE
The white dragonorb was taken to the tower at Wayreth, south of Abanasinia, where it would be displayed for all to see for centuries. Most had no idea what it was when the walked past it, only the oldest and strongest knowing it’s true purpose. After the lost Battles with Istar, and shortly before the Cataclysm, the exiled elven mage Feal-Thas was summoned by the ruling council of the Conclave and given the orb.
Surprised, he was instructed to take it south to Icewall Castle in order to keep it safe, believing that the Kingpriest of Istar would renew his attacks and come again form the last towers. That orb remains at Icewall Castle under the constant care of Feal-Thas, who has since pledged himself with the Dragonarmies and been given title and rank as a Highlord.
THE SILVANETI GREEN - King Lorac tried to use the Green dragon orb to save his home, yet not being strong enough in mind, has now trapped himself and the whole of Silvanesti in an unending nightmare. Broken of its control of Lorac it is now in the possession but not yet control of the Inquisition.
THE RED
THE SIXTH ORB
Rumour has it that many centuries after the Third Dragon War, a group of black robes gathered to make a sixth
dragonorb, infused with the spirit of the gold dragon Assamiel and intended to work on Metallic Dragons as the
other five work on the different kinds of Chromatic Dragons.
If the rumours are true, the sixth orb is concealed within the black wing of Bastion, a fortress built by the three
orders of the Conclave of High Sorcery to defend the portal leading to the ancient Lost Citadel. This fortress is exists outside of normal reality, in a pocket dimension within The Gray. It can only be reached through hidden portals scattered across Ansalon.
USING A DRAGONORB
Harnessing the power of a dragonorb is a dangerous and difficult task, taxing the power and the will of even the strongest. Each orb contains the essence of a powerful dragon, including it’s malevolent intelligence which persists with the orbs and reaches out to try to ensnare the minds of those foolish enough to think that they are stronger. To use a dragonorb, a character must be an arcane spellcaster – a Sorcerer, Warlock or Wizard. Or use the power of the gods
Such a character must attune to the orb during a long rest, but this is not a simple matter. As soon as their long rest is complete, the character must make a Wisdom save. If the character succeeds at the save, they are able to enforce their willpower on the orb and use it’s powers, but this does not silence the draconic intelligence completely. It will still communicate through dreams and visions, trying to entice the character towards its own personal goals.
Should the save be failed however, it is the dragon’s mind that prevails and the character becomes charmed by the orb. They will want to protect it from any harm, and will want to obey the suggestions of the draconic intelligence in the most favorable way possible. In cases where a character is charmed, each orb will try to push their wielder in certain directions depending on the colour of orb:
Black: The black orb tempts it’s wielder to gather and collect artefacts of ancient peoples. It demands a hoard in it’s name, whilst also pushing it’s wielder to develop a distaste for weakness of any kind.
Blue: The wielder of the blue orb is pushed towards a territorial mindset, at first becoming possessive, and then wanting their own spaces that no-one else can enter. The intelligence pushes it’s wielder towards acquiring territory, and then keeping out all those who would take it away.
Green: The most cunning and intelligent of the orbs, the green contains the essence of an ancient dragon named Viper. This mind enjoys tricking it’s wielder into particularly foolish actions that will benefit itself and the Dark Queen. It will sometimes even cause hallucinations, and it believed to be able to communicate with other green dragons in close proximity.
Red: The red orb promotes vanity and pomposity above all else. The orb convinces it’s wielder that they deserve to rule, and that they above all others have the right to lead by virtue of wielding the orb.
White: The intelligence of the white orb is bestial, always pushing it’s wielder towards aggression and violence. It wants it’s wielder to attack first, but also revels in a hunt. Both states of control and being charmed last for as long as the character is attuned to the orb.
POWERS OF A DRAGONORB
A character who attunes to a dragonorb is able to change it’s size between it’s inert 10”-diameter state and it’s active 20” state. In combat, changing the size of an orb requires using a bonus action. A character who has attuned to an orb and successfully overcome the draconic intelligence within can also shrink the orb down to the size of a marble, however a character that failed the save will ever want to do such, as this diminishes the orb’s beauty.
• Charmed characters can not end their attunement, and the orb can cast suggestion on them at will, urging the character towards evil works and desires.
• Characters attuned to an orb may experience visions of the actions of large groups of dragons, glimpses of the pastor future, or even the intentions of the Dark Queen Takhisis. These are at the whim of the dragon spirit inside the orb, often intended to torment, and determined by the DM. When expanded to it’s 20”-diameter active state, the mist inside begins to swirl violently and the arcane runes drifting with that mist flare with arcane power. In that state, the following powers are available to the wielder:
• Once per day, a wielder in control of an orb can summon every evil dragon of it’s colour with 1 mile to it. They may be hostile for this enforced obedience.
• The wielder can cast each of the following spells once per long rest, but can only target them against dragons: dominate monster, hold monster, locate creature, scrying. The saving throws for these spells are DC20 for dragons of the orb’s colour, and DC15 for all other enemies
• The wielder of an active orb is immune to the elemental damage from of its colour
• Legendary Resistances do not work against dragonorb effects.
• Can use a dragon breath attack of the stored dragon color. DC 15/20?
