Raistlin Majere
This is Raistlin's backstory as it is known. Only the test and his twin brother leaving him is shrouded in mystery.
Raistlin Majere
Early Life:
Raistlin was born to Gilon Majere and Rosamun Majere in the town of Solace in 326 AC, shortly after his twin brother Caramon Majere. The younger of the twins, Raistlin was a difficult birth and was born feet first, which almost caused the death of his mother. Raistlin was not given much chance to live by the midwife, but his older half-sister, Kitiara Uth Matar, took to him at once and nursed him to health. Kitiara named him after a hero in tales told to her by her father, Gregor Uth Matar, who described the imaginary Raistlin as not the bravest or strongest, but the most clever and strong-willed who used his wits to outsmart his opponents.
Unlike his healthy older twin, Raistlin was sickly and small by comparison, and was constantly harassed by the other children, though he was protected by his older brother. Since Rosamun was prone to lapse into a comatose state on a regular basis and Gilon was away cutting wood for long periods of time, the twins were raised for the most part by Kitiara. However, Raistlin related well to his mother as he grew older, since he saw some of his gift for magic in her periods where she entered her comatose state.
At the age of six, Raistlin was taken by his father to study magic under Master Theobald. There are conflicting stories about how Raistlin was admitted to the school; one suggests that he was admitted by being able to guess the name of the school, Poolbottom, while another indicates that he was interviewed by the archmage Antimodes, who also paid his tuition while he was at the school and whom he corresponded with for the duration of his time there. Regardless, Raistlin was unpopular with the other students of Theobald’s school, who had given him the nickname of ‘Sly One’ and would constantly pick on him.
Although some accounts differ, Kitiara left home around the same time as Raistlin joined Theobald’s mage academy. She would periodically return home with small gifts for Caramon, such as a wooden sword, and though she felt great affection for Raistlin as her “first battle,” she did not relate well to Raistlin’s intellectual pursuits.
By 342 AC, Raistlin had been promoted to a novitiate at Poolbottom, and was growing into a considerably skilled young mage. His father was injured during a logging accident, and whilst dying the widow Judith denounced Raistlin as an evil mage, and the family as lacking of faith, which caused the accident. Gilon died a short while later, and then Rosamun fell into a trance which she never came out of and later died. Left without parents, Caramon ended up taking care of his brother, refusing to leave his twin for adventure with his half-sister Kitiara.
Within two short years, the twins had expanded their circle of friends, and went on a number of adventures with Travok, Cathal Half-Elven, the kender Moordinand, and a human woodsmen Mathias Gregor. Together, they journeyed with Travok and Cathal on the road to protect him from bandits when he would travel to sell his wares. One trip involved a boating accident in Crystalmir Lake, in which poor Travok was dropped in the waters.
Teenage Years:
Years later the companions leave Solace on an escort mission to Haven only to find out the dwarves who tasked them were kidnapped on the road. After saving the duo they soon became embroiled in a dark cult lead by a man called The Black Spider, looking to plunder the ancient wave echo cave for its legendary magical forge. The Dwarf who hired them being after the same thing promised a hefty reward for clearing out Wave Echo Cave. After many heroic actions by the companions, they defeated the cult, drove them out of town and were named heroes of Haven.
The Companions decided to split up in 346 AC, to find evidence of the true gods, and also to undertake their own personal quests. They agreed to meet again five years hence, at the Inn of the Last Home. On returning to Solace, Raistlin returned to Solace to find that a plague has struck the town. Raistlin tended to the sick and dying, and soon after was offered an invitation to take the Test of High Sorcery.
The Mercenary Years:
With the Test of High Sorcery under his belt, Alone, Raistlin traveled across the land, selling his services as mercenaries to whoever might grant him employment. He was able to successfully mix magic and steel, and survived many a campaign as a result
In 347 AC, Raistlin joined the service of the Baron of Langtree, otherwise known as the Mad Baron. During this period Raistlin encountered two new friends: a brown-robed mage (brown robes given to those who never take the test) named Horkin who acted of his war master for a time, and a half-kender named Scrounger. It was when Raistlin first encountered Immolatus that a new ability of Raistlin's cursed eyes was revealed. Upon encountering a dragon garbed in mortal guise, he could see partially through its transformation. The Mad Baron's army was sent to Hope's End to stop a rebellion, where Raistlin used the Staff of Magius to kill the red dragon Immolatus who was there in human form. The Mad Baron's army turned against and defeated the forces of Commander Kholos, defending the people of Hope's End. The army moved on and the twins stayed with the army for a time before leaving to adventure on their own once more.
Raistlin continued his quest for signs of the true gods, where Raistlin exposed a series of fraudulent clerics and charlatans, such as the Cleric of Larnish. On their travels, he encountered the kender Earwig Lockpicker and the Knight of Solamnia Gawain, and chose to aid the knight in breaking the curse of Death's Keep. The arrogant knight almost fell to the sway of the curse, however Raistlin was able to break the curse, humbled the knight, and received a vision of his future. Gawain returned to take care of his family, while the twins and Earwig traveled to the city of Mereklar.
In Mereklar, the trio encountered Bast, the Lord of Cats, and undertook a quest from the council of Mereklar to uncover a murderer in the town. He discerned that the mayor of Mereklar, Lady Shavas, was the murderer and also discovered that she was, in fact, a lich. Raistlin used a strange poison on Shavas, which caused magic to reflect back on the caster and tricked the lich into casting spells. Shavas was consumed by her own magic and Raistlin destroyed her phylactery. On defeating the lich, Bast thanked the mage before they moved on leaving Earwig behind with his new friend, the barmaid Catherine.
Raistlin gained the rank of Journeyman in the Red Robes, yet still no master would take him under his wing, they all seem fearful of something that happened to Raistlin during his test
The War of the Lance:
After Raistlin passed his Test, Ansalon was engulfed in the conflict that is known as the War of the Lance. During this time, Raistlin helps to fight the darkness threatening to consume all of Krynn with the Inquisition. He and his companions continue to play a critical role in uniting the people and fighting back the Dragons. Raistlin's magic powers seems to increased at a dramatic rate as the war progresses.
