Radiant Champions

Shortly after Kunrai became the last outpost of the mortal empires, strange new threats began to arise in the surrounding sea. These monstrosities fed on the rising levels of radiance and used it to become larger, more powerful, and more dangerous than ever before. Faced with these terrifying new threats, the nobles came together for a rare conclave to discuss the situation and search for a resolution to their problem.
Their first attempt was an elite force of fighters known as the Sea Guard. While these men and women fought valiantly, they were wholly inadequate to deal with giant sea monsters, diluvial merfolk witches, and raging water elementals that threatened to pull the entire city into the ocean's depths. Faced with certain annihilation if they didn't come up with some answer to the dangers below, the nobility contacted the most powerful guilds in Kunrai.
After a series of tense covert meetings, the city's leaders believed they had a solution. They scoured Kunrai from top to bottom in search of those rare beings capable of cultivating the Radiance and offered a fantastic deal to those they found: serve the city as elite guardians dispatched to deal with external forces, and reap incredible rewards and enjoy a life of comfort. Those who accepted were dubbed Radiant Champions and elevated to positions of extreme wealth and power within Kunrai.
Though many Champions died fighting off those first terrors, the survivors grew in power and experience. They soon became adept at dealing with even the most unusual threats and the city was saved.Over the decades since the founding of the Champions, dozens have come and gone through their ranks. The current squad is generally well-liked by the populace, but there have been fewer and fewer great threats for them to deal with. Some of the city's residents have begun to wonder, sometimes loudly, about why they continue to pay such high taxes for protection they no longer need...
