Farleáan

Farleáan is a dialect of Elvish, spoken originally on the eastern continent of Sechia. Due to its strong tonal nature that makes it sound like the speaker is almost singing rather than talking, and the fact that it was originally only spoken by elves, the language has become a 'lingua franca' of literature, poetry and songs, regardless of the fact that Common is more widespread.

Phonology

Consonant Inventory

  • Plosives: ph b th d kh g
  • Nasals: m n ŋ
  • Fricatives: f s ʃ h
  • Rhotic: r
  • Lateral: l
Note that ŋ is transcribed 'y', and ʃ is transcribed 'c'. The aspirated plosives are transcribed without the aspiration.   Plosives are considered 'closed' consonants (denoted with a C), and all others are considered 'open' (denoted with an O).

Vowel Inventory

  • ɒ ɛ i o u
Note that ɒ is transcribed 'a', and ɛ is transcribed 'e'. Vowels may take one of four tones like Láadan, denoted as follows:
  • Low: a
  • High: á
  • Rising: aá
  • Falling: áa
Vowels can be clustered together in groups of two or three. Tone marks are shown on whichever vowel the tone is to be pronounced on, for example, cúíi (meaning river).

Phonotactics

Syllables are composed using a structure abbreviated '[C/O]OVO'. Any consonant, then open consonant, then vowel (or vowel cluster), then open consonant. All terms are optional (apart from the core vowel). This structure is not completely correct however, since words in this language tend to alter their structure over time in order to be easier to pronounce. Adjacent syllables are blended to allow ease of speech or artistic use.

Morphology

Particles

Particles are used in Farleáan to mark a word's context within a sentence. This allows words to be moved around for artistic purposes, or to emphasise specific words.

Honorifics

Honorifics are sometimes placed after people's names when referring to them in the third person. The most important honorific is cíáang, used for a noble or leader.
