The Rending
It started with a sound., innocuous at first. No one truly paid it any attention. It filtered through their mind like white noise... tuning it out like distant thunder in a storm. But then it grew. Soft at first... but ever present. Growing and growing... Finally it could not be ignored. It would not be ignored! A shrieking came. Or was it the sound of shattering mirrors? Some even described it as wet silk being torn in two. It was loud, it was violent, and it shook the very world. A long, galaxy-splattered tentacle slowly reached forward as the twilight of a slightly shimmering portal lingered in an unearthly wayNo one knows what brought the rifts. All that is known is that their presence has been a source of heated debate by scientists and scholars worldwide. At first they appeared to be harmless - if disturbingly odd - anomalies of space and time... but what lurked inside these nebulous portals was anything but benign. At first they had waited, observing and learning about this new dimension. They quietly watched mortals as they struggled to comprehend them. They grew hungry. Like gaping maws, the portals grew wider. From within came beasts that twisted the imaginations of those who witnessed them; they came in forms, so many forms, and never before had anything like them been seen. Twisted abominations of grey flesh; of scales, claws and slinking tentacles that rattled the resolve of an even battle-hardened warriors. Soon these creations became known as Otherworlders, a title that would carry itself across the globe and shadow the hearts of all its people. In truth The Rending was the result of two dimensions converging, a supernatural disaster of universal proportions. It opened a pathway between worlds that was never meant to exist and it gave Otherworlders a chance to grasp that which they could not have. It spread across the lands as chaos does, beasts and humanoid creatures destroying all within their path. Some of these monstrosities came with the intent to consume, devouring all in their path. Others wanted to invade, to take and build an empire of their own. Yet there were still those who simply slipped into the world to hide themselves away, integrating quietly into society. The effects of the Otherworlders coming to the world were powerful and catastrophic. In Kurinko, the unnatural invasion rippled across the scattered clans, who struggled to fight off the numerous incursions alone. It was The Rending that would ultimately shape the structure of modern day Kurinko, as it allowed Hotaru Anah to unite the warring clans and become the first Rindai.
