One by One

A soft hiss much too close to the ear jarred Derrick from a dead sleep. He bolted to sitting upright from his position hunched over the table he had been studying over, his old bones aching from the abuse of his sleeping arrangement. Through the porthole of the ship they were on, he could see Everwinter in the distance. They would make land today.   Rhoz'Kesk snorted at him as he slowly streched out his cramping frame, "You know for certain that only one tower may be awakened at a time?" Her growling voice never ceased to grate on him. He rolled his eyes internally as he stretched.   "Yes, for the hundredth time. To release that amount of magical energy into the world at once? Disastrous, by any standard - we speak of things like, tearing holes through the very fabric of the world, here! Releasing untold catastrophes and natural disasters, the cost would be immeasurable! In fact-"   "Enough. I don't need your magic lesson, old man. Confirmation only."   Rhoz'Kesk was impatient, Derrick knew. If he could keep her imaptient, she wouldn't try to read too much into his words. There was no factual basis for this claim, he knew, but Rhoz'Kesk didn't. Since Shaze had given her half of the Stars before leaving Eastharbor, Rhoz had been itching to awaken the towers, posing that they could simply activate two upon the upcoming solstice. In a moment of panick, Derrick had exclaimed that this was inadvisable, impossible, even. Of course, they had questions, and Derrick had managed to convince the lot that doing so would likely have great consequences.   Rhoz wanted true confirmation thoguh, so ordered him to keep looking through his tomes to be sure. Derrick had pretended to study for weeks since they separated from the Valthuevans, as though he could learn any more from these books he had already studied in detail several times over. For now, though, it seemed she was convinced.   Hopefully, the time it bought would be enough.
