The Sunless Mask

A simple black mask, with the silver moon in all its phases in order emblazoned across the forehead adorns the nameless members of the Sunless Council. The mask conceals the face and identiy of loyal members, and reveals the false and wavering, as the moons of the mask dim with the bearers' growing uncertainty in their cause.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

While it has no mechanical parts, each mask bears strong divination and necromancy magic, allowing it to read the wearer's true intentions, and to perform its secondary function if the wearer should be false.

History

The Sunless Council first implemented the mask in order to weed out infiltrators among their ranks.

Significance

The mask identifies the wearer to other members of the organization, while simultaneously concealing their true face and identity. It serves a secondary function as a "traitor detector" of sorts. The more dedicated the wearer is to the cause of the Sunless Council, the more moons upon the mask will glow when a command word is spoken near them. If the wearer has completely turned from the cause, the moons will turn the same black as the mask, and it will disintegrate in an eruption of negative energy.

Raw materials & Components

The masks are usually made from lacquered wood, though more senior members of the council wear masks made from porcelain or various metals. The highest ranking cells are said to wear masks carved of solid pieces of obsidian.
