Scrolls of Nedev - April 5th, 2023

General Summary

1st day of Annotide, 12th Year of the Reign of Empress Sorsasta, 5728
From the Journals of Brother Xindge
Xindge wanders into the agricultural market to buy a meat pie when he notices William and Tellem. Tellem has just bought a pork shoulder to bring to his food cart.
Interestingly, the market seems to be clearing out. The farmers had pulled the tarps off of their crates of food when a cart comes rolling through, into the middle of the square with a flag with an eye sigil. Hurriedly, the shopkeepers tarp back up their wares and fade back into the background. People are scattering to leave the square. Even the watchmen at the gate seem to have disappeared into the towers to either side of the gate except for one who is stopping the flow of traffic into the gate. Xindge eats his meat pie, relishing every bite. Xindge and Tellem converse at Tellem’s food cart.
The cart with the eye stops and Aluratasa gets off of the wagon, and her muscle, Charley the Bonebreaker, stays on. Aluratasa pets the horse. William notices she is very friendly to the horse. William approaches her, Charlie alerts Aluratasa to his presence. William asks her how she’s doing. She says she’s fine. She wants to know if he wants to meet “the boss”. William is playing a con and playing it well. But she doesn’t go for it. She says the boss is through a door in the cart. William eyes us, we amble over. The door locks from the outside. Inside there are two benches but no one in there. She gestures for us to get in. William gets in first, then Tellem and Xindge. It’s dark but we get light-adjusted. Xindge does a light cantrip. The cart seems to go dead straight and then after a few minutes we hear Charlie say something that tells us we went through the South Gate. We continue on outside the town. We travel another five minutes or so and a window opens and Aluratasa throws a potion in and shuts the window. Tellem and William don’t fight it and they freeze in place. Xindge successfully fights it off. For two minutes. Then he freezes in place as well.
William and Tellem take a breath and they are in a small room. They see a woman on a balcony. She says “Welcome William and…a Lightbringer!” She wants to know why William wants the amulet she stole. She offers to sell it or have them do a job for her. William bargains with her, citing his expenses despite the botched job. He asks what is so important about the amulet, she says she has a buyer for 500gp. William continues to negotiate. He tries to bullshit her, she isn’t buying it. He plays the insanity card.
Xindge pops up into the room, acting confused. The negotiation continues.
The Baron Zazar Nocroth has given his son, Zazar the Younger a signet ring to give him the power to be his proxy. She wants us to get a scroll case, put a piece of parchment in it, seal it with the son's signet ring and then bring it back to her. We have five days to do the job. She is also holding a cleric, Brother Hadraroth, hostage and says she will set him free if we succeed. We place the scroll on the mantel of the fireplace in the Two Fish Tavern. William tries to negotiate further but the boss ain’t biting. Xindge interjects to say he’s in. Tellem deduces from her voice that she is elven or half-elven.
She tells us to take out our daggers. We do so. She tells us to cut ourselves and we do and reappear lying in a ditch on the side of the road, the cart heading back into the city.
The amulet in question is silver on a silver chain. It’s shaped like a snowflake. It’s a relic of St. Thardar, made him experience no fear in a fight against orcs back in the day.
Here our heroes sit in the ditch, discussing strategy.
They pick themselves up. Someone pissed on William. They walk back to town. They continue to strategize.
They get back to town, life has resumed normal pace. Xindge buys another meat pie. Yummy.
Strategizing continues. How to get this signet ring seal? Can they employ other high-placed people to get use into a position to get it? Is this ethical? Can they make a forged seal?
They head over to Ilic Basi shop. He’s the guild master, head of the merchants’ guild. We arrive at his tchotchke shop. Ritzy tchotchkes. His associate, Voletta is there, recognizes Tellem and her smile falters. She asks cautiously what we are doing there and then tries to put us off. Xindge browses the wares. He buys a silver cat statue.
As Xindge makes his way back to the temple, William stakes out the Juggling Jester and Tellem goes to the Monastery of the Light to check out someone’s chest. Kinky.
William heads to the Jester. There are people eating, playing instruments and singing. He goes in. There are card games going on. The Baron’s son is not around. William waits for him.
Tellem gets back to the monastery and Brother Hadraroth’s chest is waiting for him in his room. The chest was locked the last time he looked at it. Tellem attempts to open the chest. He is successful. Investigating the contents of the chest, he comes across clothing, coins, a war hammer and a chain shirt. He also finds correspondence, one to the high priest, which is sealed and a few other open letters. One from the high priest at the county capitol, explaining where the amulet is supposed to be picked up and then delivered to. The amulet was to be delivered to the high priest of Nedev along with the sealed letter, was picked up elsewhere, not relevant. Tellem puts everything back and leaves.
Xindge puts the cat back in his room and seeks out Jerry. Not much is accomplished.
William is sitting in the Jester and he notices a person come in who he doesn’t recognize them, but they recognize William. It’s an older man and he stops, stares, and shakes his head, goes to get a drink and then looks back over his shoulder at William. He walks over to William’s table and sits down. They engage in conversation. He knows William’s dad. His name is Canwy, knew William’s dad back in the day. They have a lovely chat.
Tellem heads to the temple archives. He wants to know if there are any documents bearing the Baron’s seal. Xindge pops on over. The archivist brings back an example of an unbroken seal. A large, ornate N in the middle with a small Z to the left and a small N to the right. A wavy line surrounds the letters to represent the rivers surrounding the town.
Tellem and Xindge go back to the monastery to grab the letter telling of the amulet’s existence and then they go to the Knight Captain of the Lightbringers, Grumur Peaceswift. You wanted evidence? I’ve got evidence! We present to this guy the full story so far with the evidence. He tells us that he has a signet ring, that Tellem’s father has one. The Baron’s ring and likely the son’s ring are different. The leaves a trace of magic to confirm that it is real. The Baron is hosting a dinner party in two nights, the announcement of his son’s engagement to Lady Ysrada Shadsar. They will likely be wearing their signet rings. We may be able to get the 500 gold to just buy the Amulet through the temple.
Tellem and Xindge meet up with William at the Juggling Jester. Nothing has transpired. They continue to strategize a way to get the imprint. They stay for dinner and await the potential arrival of the Baron’s son.
He never showed up. But William has a friend. A very skillful friend.
