The Fangs of the Night Witch

Many years ago in the Empire of Kyrnia, a sorceress named Nidia Wachnortia, came to power in in what is now the town of Froi in Zaera. She was a foreigner from some unnamed land, although many at the time thought she was from the lands of the Horse Clansin the distant west. She arrived in Froi, and soon found an audience with Baron Ashe Zendarch. Baron Zendarch had just lost his wife in childbirth a few months prior, and Nidia was beautiful, and flirtatious with the Baron. Within a few weeks an engagement was announced, and at the next new moon, the Baron and Nidia were wed.   On the night of the wedding, the Baron died suddenly after leaving his wedding chamber and announcing the marriage was consumated. The new Baroness immediately became the most eligible widow in town, but she was not interested in getting married so quickly, although she often took men to her bed over the next several years. As Baroness Nidia consolidated power and position, first in Froi, and then extending out into the surrounding areas, she played a long game of making men do her bidding and pledging their support of her rule.   Eventually, the Count of Zaera became concerned as Baroness Nidia's power and influence where beginning to rival him. He started sending envoys to figure out her game and plans, but the envoys always returned in full support of the Baroness. The Count then ordered the Baroness to come to him at his court and explain herself to him. Baroness Nidia refused, and the Count and a large number of his men then marched on the Baroness and declared her a traitor.   The war went on for several years, before the Baroness' forces were finally reduced to those in Froi, and eventually to just the citidel of Froi itself. Before storming the citidel, the Count asked the Baroness to yeild so that her life might be spared, as well as the lives of all her remaining men. The Baroness appeared on the battlements to respond. She claimed that she was the true power in Zaera, and that the Count should bend the knee to her. Thinking that she was completely insane at this point, the Count orderd the attack. Once the walls were breached, the Count led his men through the citadel, and eventually to the roof where the Baroness was waiting.   As the count approached the Baroness revealed her true nature, she was a vampiress as well as a sorceress. Her fangs bared, she attaacked the Count and slew him, before his men had a chance to react. But as the Counts men moved in to engage the Baroness, she twisted away from their blows, leaving her two fangs still stuck into the neck armor of the Count. Screaming in agony that caused the Count's men to drop to thier knees, she cursed the lands of Zaera, and promised to return each year to take a member of the Count's family. She then cast a spell and disappeared in a flash.   To this day, the Counts or Countesses of Zaera where those two fangs on a silver chain around their necks to remind them that the Night Witch will be back for their families.
