Wompers

In the Morass of Dorghulal lurks many a creature that instills fear in those that see them and live to tell the tales. None more so than the Wompers.   First, seen and mentioned by Notorin Swiftarrow during one of his expeditions to the Morass south of Nedev, Wompers are large reptiles that are equally at ease in the water, or in the trees of the swamp. Wompers are described as scaly, and seven to twenty feet long, with eight short, but powerful legs that propel them through the water at great speed, faster than most boats can be rowed, and give them strong purchase while climbing in the twisted trees of the wetlands. The jaws of these creatures are short and narrow, and small compared to the rest of the their entire body. The teeth of a Womper are small and pointed and very sharp, and are not designed so much for killing as they are for holding their prey. With a torso taking up about a third of the creature, the tail makes up the about half the body, and it is the tail that is the most dangerous part of the beast. The tail is heavy, and strong, and can whip back and forth striking creatures in an direction. The tail has several pointy scales at the end that protrude like a morning star.   When stalking prey, the Womper will eaither approach silently through the water, or rest unmoving in a tree until the prey passes by, and once within range, the tail will lash out making a loud womping noise as it strikes the target. Urually one such strike is enough to kill most creatures or people it attacks, but if needed, the jaws will clamp down on the stunned creature as additional tail lashes are delivered. The prey is then dragged back into the swamp to be consumed.   While people do not seem to be its regular meal, the wompers have learned that people are edible. Usually, Wompers eat large rodents, or other mammels it can find, and it is assummed that they also eat fish and other aquatic species.   While native to the swamps south of Nedev, occassionaly in the spring time, a Womper has been seen in the rivers near Nedev.
