A large racing circuit in the centre of
Giliona in the shape of a horseshoe. Construction began in the 16
th year of the
Great Empire, and concluded in the 23
rd year. It was originally intended to be officially opened on the 50
th birthday of
King Siesiar, however he
suffered an unfortunate accident the year before and was thus unable to attend.
The six stands form a semi-circle around the outer curve of the track, wrought from enduring
Emperor Stone and protected from the elements by a canopy of smoky crystal glass which has against all odds somehow managed to survive intact for over a millennium and a half. A dozen large and brightly coloured pennants hang from the canopy, two for each of the competing teams of racers. A thirteenth pennant in bone white hangs from the Emperor's box in the middle.
It is unknown exactly what was raced around the track during the time of the Great Empire, but it seems that races ceased to be held some time during the early 5
th century. At some time after that point, a large marble dias was erected in the empty space in the middle of the horseshoe, which is used for official ceremonies.
Racing events resumed in the 1599
year with the advent of the
Racing Chariot, and the sport has only been gaining popularity since. Chariot races draw massive crowds, and many of the top chariot riders have become celebrities.
Teams
Six teams of chariot racers regularly compete at the circuit. Each team fields two chariots at the same time, and holds between one and ten chariots in reserve depending on the length and format of the race.
The Red Team
The Red team ride chariots decorated with a single red stripe down the side. On average, Red team chariots are the fastest but struggle going around the tight hairpin turns. They have a vicious rivalry with the Blue team.
The Orange Team
The Orange team ride chariots painted a solid orange colour. The Orange team is sometimes considered to be cursed, as their chariot riders frequently get themselves embroiled in scandals.
The Yellow Team
The Yellow team ride chariots decorated with a yellow sunburst. Though they rarely win, the chariot riders themselves are popular personalities.
The Green Team
The Green team ride chariots decorated with slanted green stripes. Their chariot riders are typically rising stars, but are still young and inexperienced.
The Blue Team
The Blue team ride chariots decorated with a blue wave pattern. They have a vicious rivalry with the Red team.
The Violet Team
Rumoured to be the favourite of the
Patricci of Giliona, the Violet team rides chariots decorated with a checkerboard pattern of black and expensive Tyrion Purple. For whatever reason, other teams tend to not see the Purple team chariots coming up behind them until they get overtaken.
The White Team
Some say, that he naturally faces due east. And that he once won a staring contest against a statue of King Siesiar. All we know is that he's called
Il Stiggio.
