The Undergate
The Undergate is a giant doorway in the mountains of Xalia which leads down deep into the under dark. It is rarely traveled as most drow never leave the under dark through the door, on the other side of the gate a long dangerous tunnel filled with ruins and caverns leads down to the main underdark complex of caverns.
Purpose / Function
The Doorway was built many years ago to block the outside world from entering the Underdark, to dissuade intruders further many traps are built along the caves which lead from the door to the main parts of the Underdark.
Alterations
Overtime the door has been made more and more heavy due to add ons by the Drow, making it hard to open without magic. Magic enchantments on the door have also been added making it insanely heavy, so that only a creature of immense strength could open it, and making it so that the door is nearly indestructible unless great amounts of force are applied to it.
Architecture
The gate is built out of black stone, carved with perfectly symmetrical intricate patterns appearing so neatly that it is as if they were carved by some sort of machine. The door has no handle and an arch hangs over the area around the door. The arch is made of the same black stone carved with intricate patterns, the carved lines continue onto the door. The door is made in such a way that it appears almost as a solid wall and the central line down the middle is completely invisible when it is closed. Many monsters or people who do not know of what it holds simply pass by, thinking it is just a strange mural built into the mountain.
History
The undergate was built thousands of years ago, after the Drow started coming into contact with the High elves. As soon as they met they knew they wanted nothing to do with each other so the Drow built the gate to guard and conceal the under dark.
