Act IV Session 3 - Sha'Rekoth

Killiwake carefully navigated the Seabird through the fog, following the direction that Murray indicated Halia had fled. After a short time, the Seabird passed through an invisible boundary which seemed to be holding the mist back. Beyond lay an enormous dark island. On a small scree beach lay a rowboat, presumably the vessel Halia had escaped on. Before group went ashore, Killiwake gathered them into the Captains Quarters. We explained that this was the same mysterious island he'd visited before with the previous Captain of the Seabird, Marivaldi. Although they'd come across it further east, he was convinced it was the same place. He recounted how he'd gone ashore with the Captain, and three other crewmembers. They were attacked by creatures who killed the three crewmembers, he and Marivaldi barely escaped. And for that reason, he wouldn't be going ashore, nor sending any of his men with them. Aetilius decided to wait aboard the Seabird as well.
The Seabird anchored a distance off shore, and the crew carried them to the scree beach on a rowboat. Once ashore, the crew returned to the Seabird, and the party investigated the beached rowboat. It appeared to come from the Dymiter. They decided to burn it, to try and draw Halia out. Using some of Ramas's lantern oil and firebolt, they torched the boat. Thick noxious black smoke quickly rose into the air in a column. The party members traversed along the cliff face on either side of the path leading up to the main surface of the island, and waited on anybody coming to investigate. After around 15 minutes, Clootie lost her grip and nearly fell, Ryoko just caught her and hauled her back up. Deciding nobody was coming, the party made their way up the path. As they walked, they noticed algae growing along many of the cracks and imperfections in the surface, making the ground and walls slippery.
A short walk up the slope, and they reached the top of the cliffs and looked around. They found themselves in the midst of a ruined city. The path led up to one end of a long straight street. On either side loomed the collapsed remains of dozens of squat stone buildings. The buildings closer to the edge of the island appeared to be more dilapidated, but the further from the cliff edge, the more recognisable they were. The stonework of the buildings had been stained dull green by algae. The surface of the walls were pockmarked with clusters of dried barnacles, and mussel shells sprouted like salt encrusted flowers along the edges. Along the walls the group noted brittle, dessicated coral plates protrude from the stone; and around the base of the walls were clusters of of empty shells, and crusted tendrils of coral reaching upward like tiny petrified trees. The city had obviously spent a long time beneath the waves.
Ahead, the street continued straight up a fairly shallow incline. Rising up beyond was a massive twisted black crystal tower, obviously out of place among the rest of the buildings; completely undamaged and free of any marine growth, it loomed over the ruined city. The party decided this was the obvious place to investigate.
They found the tower built in the midst of piles of rubble and detritus, covered in thick layers of dried seaweed and algae. It appeared that the debris was all that remained of a large building which once stood here. In the very centre of the destruction, the mysterious tower stood. It's surface was made of black, polished crystal, as though carved from a single cyclopean piece of crystal. It looked like a perfection of the Verani style of stone shaping magic. In the wall of the tower they found a smooth triangular portal burrowing through the otherwise perfectly smooth wall. Slumped against the wall beside the entrance was a bleached white skeleton in tattered rags. Clootie noticed a tacky golden medallion resting against it's ribcage, embossed with a simple bird motif. She picked it up, thinking it might mean something to Killiwake. She also noticed deep lateral scoring across the skeleton's ribs, and the right femur was splintered.
Inside, the party found themselves in a labyrinth of twisting corridors within a cavernous chamber. After exploring a few options, the party decided to fly up onto the top of the walls. From here they had a vantage point across the whole maze, and they quickly spotted a massive staircase leading up from the centre of the maze to a recess in the ceiling.
They made their way across the top of the walls. On the wall beside the staircase they came across another body. Or at least the upper torso. The lower ribs had been shattered, the vertebrae at the bottom of the spine have been severed, and the lower body was nowhere to be found. Clootie noticed this skeleton was also wearing a matching golden medallion, which she grabbed.
The party then made their way up the stairs. The stairs led out into a corridor, a number of flickering torches in sconces on the walls gave it surprisingly homey feel. There were three rooms on this floor which the party investigated. They discovered what appeared to be three bedrooms.
One was fairly sparsely furnished, with a sturdy, utilitarian bed; a simple looking wooden dresser; and a large crystal sculpture of a jaguar mid pounce, in front of which sits a long coal firepit. On top of the dresser was a plain leather scabbard containing a dagger with a black crystal hilt. Ryoko swiped this. There was also an elegant wooden weapon rack, with two silver shortswords of beautiful craftsmanship hanging on it.
In the second room they found two beautiful wooden dressers, adorned with trailing flowers and scented candles. A bubbling fountain of interlocking grey slate blocks stood in the middle of the room. In the corner was a large four poster bed, enclosed by deep red silken curtains and topped with a plush mattress and duvet. In the very corner of the room was a full height standing mirror, surrounded by pink flowers which seem to emit a pale cerise light. In the back corner of the room, a large maple wood cello rested against a comfortable looking red velvet chair. And nestled in the very corner were two small tables, topped with thick red velvet upholstery, displaying a selection of exquisite silver jewelry. Ramas naturally stole all of the jewellery, then pissed in the fountain. Clootie raked through the helped herself to a beautiful white dress.
The final room looked like a cluttered library. The walls were lined with bookshelves, from the floor right up to the rafters. The lower shelves all match, but the upper shelves seemed like somebody had haphazardly stacked other random bookshelves on top of them to give extra storage space. The shelves were all full to bursting with what must be thousands of tomes, some even lying horizontally in the space between the top of the books on the shelves and the bottom of the shelf above. In the corner of the room was a simple looking bed, pressed up against the bookcases almost as an afterthought. In the middle of the room were a number of wooden tables covered in scrolls and potions and jewels, general magical paraphenalia. Arcane symbols were carved into the floor in front of these tables. Piles of mechanical junk were strewn across the floor in one corner of the room. The party decided to ransack the room thoroughly. Ramas flipped the mattress off the bed - to "check" for anything hidden. Ryoko started to leaf through a simple leather book, swollen and crudely bound, on the table. It seemed to be a journal of some sort. She passed it to Clootie. Ramas extended Volux into a massive claw, and methodically knocked every book from the shelves on to the floor. He then decided to rake through the pile of mechanical scrap, pocketing a handful of valuable looking bronze parts. He then contemplated knocking over one of the braziers in the room to set fire to the books, but Clootie and Ryoko restrained him. They felt the last thing they needed to do was set fire to their exit route.
Having thoroughly fucked shit up, the group headed up the stairs to the next floor. Up here they found a chamber with a number of glowing purple runes on the floor. Clootie recognised their function - this was a teleportation anchor. Wizards can use the particular sequence of runes to reliably open long distance portals back to this room. Again, deciding to be as passive aggressive and irritating as possible, the party decided to deface these symbols. They tried using a dagger to score them, but then Clootie got fed up and used Kulog to crack the tiles beneath each of the runes. Satisfied, the party headed up to the next floor.
On the next floor, they discovered two additional rooms. Clootie examined what appeared to be a war room of sorts. A huge central table was sculpted into a 3D relief model of Lanath. A number of models marked with Netheril symbols were scattered across the surface. Clootie tried to note the symbols and their locations down, as accurately as she could. In the other room, Ramas and Ryoko discovered a large shard of rough purple crystal, around 4ft in length, hovering a few feet above the ground in the middle of the room. Uncanny pink light pulsed deep inside the structure of the crystal. Ryoko eventually touched the surface of the crystal, and immediately seized up and collapsed unconscious.
As the others tried to wake her, three figures appeared in the doorway, their faces shrouded in voluminous hoods. The middle one (a male voice) spoke to them. Based on the conversation, the party was able to identify the left most figure as a woman named Udara, and the right most figure as woman named Ingrith. Clootie recognised the voice of the right hand figure as the Jaguar. Based on the context, Halia apparently was with the Jaguar at the moment. The middle figure informed the party he was going to awaken the guards, and the figures disappeared (most likely astral projections)
Ryoko woke up, having only a vague recollection of what she'd seen - like a nightmare. Darkness, swirling and alive, eyes, thousands of them - all around you - watching you hungrily, full of malice; something moving around in the darkness, sinuous - like a snake; mouths - so many mouths; teeth.
Having been rumbled, the party decided to leave before the guards reached them. They made their way back down the stairs and into the labyrinth. They were flying over towards the exit when suddenly two wicked looking curved claws sprouted from Ryoko's abdomen, an icy chill spreading through your flesh. She was suddenly snatched backwards into the shadows, which enveloped her as they cackled maliciously. Clootie dropped Ramas on top of the wall and leapt after her. But she appeared to have vanished. Then Ramas heard a sound on the opposite side of the wall. He and Clootie jumped down and found Ryoko in the hands of a terrifying undead creature with massive bone claws. Ramas shot it with his pistol. It tore a chunk of flesh off the creature's face, but the wound quickly closed up. Clootie attacked it with Kulog, and it flinched slightly form the crackling lightning, but this also seemed to deal little real damage. Clootie managed to knock Ryoko free. The creature turned and skewered Ramas with it's claws, tearing a huge wound in his abdomen. Ryoko managed to pull Lightbringer out and ignite it. The sudden burst of sunlight caused the creature to shriek and recoil. Taking the opportunity, Ryoko grabbed Ramas under his arms, and she and Clootie both flew towards the exit. As they flew out of the triangular opening, they narrowly escaped another bony claw which swiped at Ramas from the shadows beside the doorway.
The three figures appeared in front of the party again, and expressed their frustration at the group. The middle figure waved his hand, and a low rumble started beneath them before the ground lurched violently to the side. The whole island started to lurch forward, lifting up at a steep angle as it plunged into the water. Ryoko and Clootie both lifted off the group, lifting Ramas with them. Together they managed to fly back to the Seabird as the island sank beneath the waves.
Back aboard the Seabird, Clootie handed Killiwake the medallions she'd recovered from the bodies. With tears in his eyes, Killiwake thanked her, placing them around his neck alongside another matching medallion.
