Akai

The Panda Warrior

Akai was just a simple panda bear living in Cadia Riverlands, Stream Valley who dreamed of becoming a hero. Later trained and mentored by the Frog Immortal, Akai was able to save his hometown from the wrath of the Monkey King, Sun. Akai now fights with the likes of his heroes, the Oriental Fighters, to face Black Dragon's impending widespread invasion.

Backstory

The world isn't like me, it's more than just black or white.

There were no heroes in Stream Valley, only chubby pandas.

Among them was Akai, a fish seller with a monotonous routine that revolved around fishing and selling his catches. As days went by, an exhilarating idea gradually formed in his mind: To Become A Hero!

The heroes in legends would wield almighty swords, fight evil dragons, protect people from all harm… Akai clenched his fat fists and devoted himself to all sorts of "heroic deeds." No matter what troubles his neighbors ran into, be it mending a roof or rescuing a cat, Akai was always the first to offer help. The only problem was… rotund and clumsy as he was, it seemed he'd only caused more trouble instead.

"Akai, stop trying to be a hero!" The neighbors didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Akai, however, refused to give up so easily. And so one day, when he was out fishing, he dreamed about the four Oriental Fighters of the Cadia Riverlands… "If only I could join their ranks," Akai said to himself. Unknowingly, he began to throw punches and kicks by the creek…

"Sluggish punches. Wrong! Sloppy footwork. Wrong! Slow reaction. Awful! Yet you want to become an Oriental Fighter?!"

An angry roar sounded from within the creek, while Akai's float shook violently as if something enormous had just taken the bite. Akai, over three hundred pounds as he weighed, was almost dragged into the water! Finally, whatever was at the other end of his rod gave up, and Akai reeled it in. It was—a frog!?

The frog leaped atop Akai's head, stroking his goatee and claimed himself the Frog Immortal, a disciple of the Great Dragon who drifted down the creek from the Dragon Altar. He said Akai was a natural for martial arts, and that if Akai underwent his training, he'd definitely become an unparalleled hero—on one condition, of course: Akai gave him all his bait.

The story about the chubby panda disciple and his little frog master thus began!

The first year of training under his new found master was exhausting, yet Akai was thrilled!

The second year... was also quite exhausting, but the ever-persistent panda carried on still!

The third year was ever so exhausting, and Akai was just about to give up…

Under the guidance of the Frog Immortal, Akai gradually grasped the hang of martial arts and developed his namesake moves—Panda Punches! As he proudly called it. With his relatively refined moves and years of training, Akai could easily catch petty thieves and chase away wild beasts.

When he wasn't chasing thieves and saving villages, however, the panda disciple and his frog master would fish together by the creek. The frog often sat on Akai's shoulder as they watched the serene view before them.

Everything seemed to be going in the right direction, except… Akai's weapon was still just an old fishing rod, and his chubby shape still nothing like that of a true hero.

"We martial artists never look down on ourselves!" said the Frog Immortal with a stern look. "As long as you practice hard—"

"—I'll become the fifth Oriental Fighter and be praised by everyone?!" Akai interrupted hastily.

Frustrated, the Frog Immortal hopped up and punched Akai's stomach, "Is that the only reason you practice martial arts? To be evaluated by others? To be praised?"

The poor panda nursed his aching stomach, "but master, isn't that the cool part of being a hero? To be known by the people and be part of their stories?!"

"Becoming a hero is far more than simply being a part of someone's storybook. In order to be a true hero, you must make the ultimate sacrifice—" Akai didn't understand it at the time, but his master knew he would, eventually.

In the days after, Akai gradually honed his Panda Punches. He was getting closer and closer to achieving his dream!

One day, the Oriental Fighters came to Stream Valley on a mission. Akai, who had always been a fan of the four, quickly rushed to the tavern they were staying and peeked from the wall outside: the Oriental Fighters were practicing martial arts in the yard. In pure fanatic wonder, Akai followed their training, their movements so fast however, he could hardly keep up. It didn't stop him from savoring this moment though!

The Oriental Fighters were the four distinguished disciples of the Great Dragon—Zilong, Wanwan, Ling, and Baxia. Seeing the legendary characters right in front of his eyes, Akai was thrilled beyond belief! At the same time, however, he found his clumsy punches a far cry from the Oriental Fighters' masterful moves…

He began to come up with all sorts of excuses to skip Frog Immortal's martial art lessons— headaches, backaches, or even fur-aches!— when actually he was admiring the Oriental Fighters' every move from the top of the tavern wall.

It was during this time that Akai accidentally learned that the Great Dragon had never taken a frog as his disciple, yet there had been one among the servants. This frog, once responsible for helping the Great Dragon catch flies and other bugs, secretly learned martial arts behind the back of the Great Dragon, and was thus expelled from the Dragon Altar by the guards…

In hindsight, Akai realized that he'd already met this frog.

After learning the truth, Akai stopped going to the Frog Immortal to learn martial arts.

Without telling anyone, Akai set off to the Dragon Altar. He wanted to learn true martial arts from the Great Dragon himself, to become a real hero and protect Stream Valley!

A panda, wanting to learn martial arts? The Oriental Fighters were amused by this chubby country boy and so taught him a move or two from time to time. Akai flourished under the training of Zilong, Wanwan, Ling, and Baxia. "I'll introduce you to Master." Zilong promised Akai before the Great Dragon was about the end his solitary meditation.

"I'm about to become a hero!" Akai was carried away by this thought and forgot all about how he hadn't even said goodbye to the Frog Immortal.

And then the disaster struck.

After expelling the Evil God, Lieh, Yu Zhong headed straight to the Dragon Altar with his men. He wanted to slay the Great Dragon and seize the divine throne! The four Oriental Fighters went to fight him in haste. As soon as they left, however, the mischievous Chang'e let Sun out. Having been locked up by the Great Dragon for centuries, Sun was furious when he heard his hometown had been occupied by pandas in his absence! With his Golden Staff in hand, Sun rushed to Stream Valley, vowing to eliminate them all and taking the land back.

Akai was caught in a dilemma. He wanted to follow the Oriental Fighters to fight Yu Zhong and distinguish himself before the Great Dragon, but on the other side, the armless pandas simply had no chance against the frenzied Sun! Wait, there was also a frog—

Akai felt something was missing on his shoulder. He turned his head and realized it was the spot where the Frog Immortal used to sit…

In that moment, Akai remembered his master's words and the true reason he wanted to become a hero suddenly rushed back to his mind. He knew what he should do!

"A true hero fights for the people, not for the glory!"

The storytellers of Stream Valley got a new story to tell—the Tale of the Almighty Panda!

That day, Sun smashed his Golden Staff at the entrance to Stream Valley, roaring in rage that he'd wipe out all the pandas! Just as the peaceful land was about to meet its doom, an aged frog staggered forth from the trembling crowd and fought Sun alone!

The Frog Immortal was thrown away by Sun in merely a few rounds, when a fishing rod caught him in mid-air—it was our Panda Hero, Akai!

Akai and the Frog Immortal joined hands and fought Sun together. At the most critical moment, Akai parried Sun's staff with his exclusive Panda move. Taken by surprise by this panda's moxie and prowess, Sun retracted his Golden Staff, "hmm, you're not bad for a flabby panda."

"Not just panda, I'm the panda, Akai."

Amused, Sun gave him a moment to speak the truth, and the misunderstanding was solved.

Before Akai could even apologize to his master, the Frog Immortal leaped high and punched him square in the stomach. "You brat! Skipping so many training sessions! Did you practice what I taught you today?!"

Once the threat was settled and done, the master and disciple fish together by the creek of Stream Valley, Akai dividing the earthworms: One for fish, one for Master, another for fish, another for Master…
