Irys Ethnic Group

Ethnicites / Cultures

Written by Fulma02

Introduction

Irys are a Norlandian ethnic group native to the modern-day northern Norlandian province of "Chagarde". They speak the Irysin language and they call themselves Irysi which means "from Irys" in local language. They shape one of the main ethnic groups residing in the northern parts of Norland. Irysian people, along with the closely related Oori people, comprise a portion of the main Norlandian ethnicity, who primarily inhabit the Norstan and Shiqar regions of Norland.

Economy

Irysian people live both along the Chagarde and Mohsenaf provinces, and in the surrounding plains. Consequentially, those living along the northern side of the Banavald mountains tend to raise livestock, while those living in the nearby plains tend to do farming. Irysians play an important role in provincial and national economy, supplying a large portion of the region's agricultural staples, such as rice, grains, tobacco, and tea. Other major industries include fishing and caviar exports, and the production of silk. In addition to agricultural activities, Irysians also control other principal sectors of commerce of the province of Chagarde such as tourism, and share administrative and government positions with civil servants from other regions of Norland.

People

The population of Irysians is estimated to be between 6 and 8 million (2016 estimation). They mainly live along the Northern coasts of the Chagarde province and are one of the main ethnic groups that reside in the northern parts of Norland. The Irysians are closely related to the neighboring Ooris, and other northern groups of similar descent, such as the Tualsers, the Fehris, and the Nardiks people.

Language

The Irysin language is a member of the Northern branch of the Norlandian languages. It is the primary language spoken amongst the Irysian people, although various regional and local dialects of the Irysin language are common. Irysian people are fluent in both the Irysin language and standard Nardiks. Nardiks is the official language of education in Norland, and since teachers are discouraged from using regional dialects and accents in class, the Irysin language is taught only to children at home.   The Irysin and Oori languages (but not other Norlandian languages) share certain typological features with each other. However, with the growth of education and press, the differentiation between Irysin language and other Norlandin languages is likely to disappear. Irysin is closely related to Ooris and the two languages have similar vocabularies.

Genetics

It has been suggested that their ancestors came after various migrations from the southern areas of Norland. Linguistic evidence supports this scenario, in that the Irysi and Oori languages (but not other Norlandian languages) share certain typological features with southern languages. There have been patterns analyzed of mtDNA and Y chromosome variation in the Irysians and Oori.
