Hirsus
Dreadful stories of some wild humanoid or feral fey enticed audiences for hundreds of millennia through the Eons since when caves and dense vegetation existed. Tales of uncontrollable monsters that would eat the children and destroy an entire village in a single fit of rage plagued many a feys circle or farmer’s community. Scholars argue that most of these tales are crude exaggerations and that they were made to inspire fear or for political intrigue.
Until shortly after the Agreeable Sylvan Pact was made by the Val-Laiknil elves such truths remained mysterious. After it, the enigmas were revealed as a sylvan people and instead of being referred to by dreary tales, they were recognized to be civilized as any other folk and became known as hirsus.
Hirsus are powerful beast like humanoids, with teeth like a bear’s, muzzles like a wolf’s, ears of a moose, horns of a goat, a bison shaped body with dire wolf’s legs, claws and tail. They can stand and walk upright but this isn’t the most comfortable to them, specially when running.
They recover very fast from injuries and can bellow a mighty roar to get the upper hand on their foes. Even though hirsus are big and strong, with time, their skeleton, claws and teeth have a tendency to turn into adamantine. This mineralization makes them more deadly, not just for the sheer upgrade to their physical prowess and resistance, but also because it causes them increasing chronic pain as their ever harder joints scrape against one another. Against intuition this suffering typically is soothed by intense or strenuous physical activity. This, in turn, makes them prone to start running and jumping wildly or simply releasing their infamous rage, which works much better. Often without warning.
They aren’t socially inept, but they live by a culture that esteems athleticism and being sharply direct, which leads to having a hard time summoning the patience to focus on greeting protocols or implement senseless etiquette. This also extends to worrying about abstract planning that doesn’t deal with immediate threats. Along the ancient infamy for bloodthirstiness and fits of fury, they can seem rude and barely civilized to those not acquainted with hirsus. Not that they give a roar to that, as they say.
