Wraiths, Free

The freedom of wraiths brings a tragic irony to it, as commonly described in heated debates among scholars in their texts. Free Wraiths are undeads of vice. Like the Vampires, they are powerful and feared while imprisoned by supernatural needs and restrictions. How much suffering this brings them and if it’s manageable or an eternal torment, only the wraiths could say. But they don’t.
Legend says, the first of their kind came about as a result from a powerful curse robbing them of any possibility of rest and contentment. It’s speculated that, thereafter, sentient beings that died in extreme emotional distress, focused on their sorrows and the unreachability of their hopes can turn into Free Wraiths; unbound into the world, but, somehow, less of themselves and ever empty. Free to roam, but weighted down by the shackles of immortality.
To function, they depend on a regular feed of emotions, dreams or even life directly. But they avoid taking life forces, as the chance of creating a vengeful new wraith can be a very perilous threat. Said to be impossible, if a free wraith feels hope or love, it dies. Curiously enough, they are a minority between the undead and several of them are not evil, even though their inflicting on the living for survival makes the difference between being evil or not relatively blurry.
