Hollis pressed harder against the ruined stone wall, his feet sinking deeper into the fetid muck. A creature was slowly lifting itself from the bog just ahead. He peered out from his hiding place at the grotesque mound of gelatinous ooze shaped like a hideous interpretation of a crow. Bones and detritus sloughed off with its outermost layer of slime.
Hollis sunk below the wall once more and tried to slow his stuttered breaths, to calm the pounding in his chest. His thoughts screamed in his mind, "How could it find me here so far from the pits? I'm so close..."
Hollis waited for the slimewraith to take flight, but the sound of it schlepping through the mud only grew louder. He was trapped. If he were to run in any direction, he would be caught instantly. "Just leave... look for the others..."
Sludge dripped onto Hollis's shoulder and burned through his skin. The slimewraith loomed over him for a brief eternity before swallowing him whole.
