With a dangerous nature hidden behind adorable looks, Fire-Eye Diggers are a common species of creature in the
Titanic Deeps. With a digestive system that can process rocks and metals into energy and claws capable of tunneling through solid surfaces, the diggers have spread throughout many places within the Deeps. They are frequently hunted as prey by larger creatures - and occasionally ranched by intelligent species - but their large eyes bely a fierce tenacity.
A Wild Creation
The creative nature of the
Titans frequently leads the few remaining within the
Titanic Deeps to attempt development of new life forms. One such experiment were the Fire-Eye Diggers. One of the giants desired a creature capable of turning raw materials into energy in some form. They were able to create a small creature that is certainly hungry for rock and metal, but were unable to figure out a way to effectively harness the internal energy created by their metabolism. Abandoning them to their fate, that giant moved on. The Diggers ended up thriving.
After centuries of existence, the Diggers have ranged well outside of their original caverns. Digging their way through walls and cavern alike, they've spread across the Deeps. They can now be found in a very wide range in the dark realm, living in colonies and carving out nests across their range. They are not quite able to spread with impunity, however, as their range has crossed the boundaries of some natural predators. Their hides are tough but not impervious, and the sorts of creatures that exist within the Deeps find the tiny furnace of their internal structure to be "spicy" rather than dangerous. They are an excellent source of energy to those that can make use of them.
Some enterprising sentient species within the Deeps even make an effort to ranch them. It is exceedingly difficult to keep possession of a creature that can dig easily through rock, but a handful of intelligent species have discovered that the Diggers are incapable of breaching
glass of all things. While fragile in some ways, the pens crafted by these beings are strangely beautiful - especially with the glowing eyes of the Fire-Eye Diggers glaring out from behind.
