A flying horror mostly native to the
Ironwood Forest in the
Savage Lands, harpies are a frightening amalgamation of claws, wings, and terrifying screeches that prey upon anything that strays into their territory. Claiming all that they can see from their perches in the canopy of the forest, harpies will hunt in packs, swooping down upon animals,
Ratlings, or even the occasional lone
Orc.
Terrors of the Wood
Residing in colonies of nests built into the canopy of the
Ironwood Forest, harpies tend to live in groups ranging from two or three up to a half-dozen. Each group will claim a territory around their nest and will bitterly fight other creatures (including other harpies) for that range. They viciously hunt, stalking prey silently from the air before swooping down with a horrifying screech that can paralyze or disorient prey. Attempting to kill prey with one crushing blow from their talons, they will resort to using their clawed hands if their target survives the first strike.
Harpies are very much creatures of the forest, and while they will attack the odd wandering creature outside of it, they will never venture far enough away to lose sight of it. Their wings, thin and papery, will change color through the seasons to match the foliage of the forest. This lets them blend in, mostly when they are nesting. When hunting they will circle above the forest, and on spotting a likely target, will pull in their wings for a steep dive through the branches. Screeching as they plummet, they extend their wings only at the last second, the thundering sound of the unfurling adding to the cacophony disorienting their prey. With a crash, their talons lance through the quarry, arms raised with claws at the ready for any fight.
The harpies are inveterate ambush hunters, however. If their initial strike does not disable the target, and it is able to raise any sort of defense (or if numbers suddenly seem to be against them) the harpies will absolutely turn and attempt to flee. Ironically their wingspan - which lets them easily soar above the forest - can be a hindrance to flying upward. In a pinch they will even resort to climbing, their claws and talons allowing them to scale the thick trees in a flash.
