Sentinels

Tasked with investigating reports of Sorcerers across the City-States Region, the Sentinels are a small, elite organization within the Mages. In a region where the Mages themselves are held with some level of mystery and awe by common folk, the appearance of the masked and secretive Sentinels within a city or village is enough to send shivers of fear through those that see them and the whisper of rumor through those that do not. 

Hunters of the Wurmborn

Sentinels are not sent to investigate every report of sorcerers that reaches the ear of a Mage, but rather only for those that seem the most dangerous. On the whole, wurmborn that appear are as much a risk to themselves as to others, and often go into hiding rather than to directly threaten a population. But occasionally a sorcerer that survives long enough and gains enough mastery of their powers may also grow enough bitterness and hate towards a society that rejects their right to exist to strike back against it. It is these most dangerous wurmborn that Sentinels are sent to track down and exterminate.
Though able to be drawn from any of the Mage Schools, Sentinels are most often highly experienced members of the Martial School, for when they are sent to track down a Sorcerer it is expected that they will face some level of combat. Sorcerers that reach the level of threat to require the services of a Sentinel are often especially violent, or have drawn followers to them with promises of power or through direct coercion. While it is exceptionally rare for multiple Sentinels to work together, they will still occasionally call for the aid of the Mercenary Guild for strength of arms when necessary. They may also seek the assistance of other Mages, especially those with strengths in Divination magic, to track down the specific locations of a target.

Anonymous Appearance

Members of the Sentinel order appear publicly wearing the heaviest of robes, hiding much of their bodily appearance. They are also particularly famous for the blank mask that they all wear, looking to the world as if their face is hidden behind glass or a gemstone. In fact, Sentinels take their public name from the mask that they wear, being referred to as "Ruby" or "Sapphire". While wearing the mask, they are traditionally anoymous except for that title - which has driven rumors that the Sentinels are immortal or at least supernaturally long-living. Whether this is true or if the masks are simply passed down is unknown outside of their secretive order.

Talents and Behavior

All Sentinels are extremely skilled in investigation and tracking. They are schooled in methods for seeking out individuals, in interrogation, and intimidation. They will consider no act unjustified if it brings them closer to their quarry, and they will be merciless in the execution of their goal. Once they have completed their task - bringing about the death of a dangerous wurmborn - they simply depart, leaving the sorcerer's henchmen or followers behind. They are not there to dispense judgment, only to carry out the First Law.
