Tempest Reefs

A jagged chain of islands off the west coast of the continent, the Tempest Reefs are constantly shrouded in heavy fog and battered by regular storms. The stormy nature of the reefs is a result of Dragonscourge-era magical combatants summoning water and air elementals who ended up feeling very possessive of their new homes. A few pre-scourge ruins dot the islands, and the Mages have managed to raise a single tower on the largest island peak to study the storms.

Geography

Scattered off of the coast, the Tempest Reefs have long been battered by heavy ocean currents, making them a sailing hazard even before the storms became near-permanent during the Dragonscourge. Most of the islands are tall broken rocks jutting out of the sea, surrounded by sharp, dangerous reefs laying below the surface. The islands are occasionally dotted with vegetation but for the most part they are bare, weathered stone.    The physical nature of the island chain is not the only thing that makes it extremely dangerous to sailing craft, however. Preternatural storms batter the islands, cloaking them in constant fog, mist, and cloud. These storms are caused by the raging essences of several extremely powerful elementals that were bound to the islands during the scourge. The magical energy constantly being unleashed by these elementals drives lightning storms, battering waves, blowing gusts of wind - and spawning lesser elementals that wander the islands and waves.

Landmarks

  • Fulminar Tower - atop one of the few islands large enough to support a significant structure, the Mages have raised a tower, fortified against storms and magically protected against elemental attacks. The tower is visited by mages of the evocation and abjuration schools and others with an interest in the storms - both to learn how to create such effects and to protect against them.
  • Wreck Point - The westernmost island of the chain is host to a large number of shipwrecks. Sailing around the Reefs is almost as dangerous as sailing through them, and most trading occurs overland by caravan through the Southern Wastes. But intrepid - or desperate - captains still occasionally attempt to navigate around the chain. Most find a drowned end.
  • Stormspire - at the eastern end of the chain, on the final island before reaching the mainland, circles the largest storm of them all. The most powerful lightning elemental that was bound was imprisoned here, by two of the most powerful Dragons during the war. Trapped in its arcane prison, the elemental nonetheless continues to rage and create destructive storms that range out across the islands.
