Harpies
To the east of the Aldrastian Empire, past the Dawnlands, lie the Mountains Ever Bright. They are not called this as reference to the False Dawn, but rather the light coming from those mountains' gods - the Phoenixes, whose holy fire birthed the harpy people. While they were created as servants to the resplendent Phoenixes, these beings are more than mere servitors. They were imbued with the same fire that rages within their masters, and this is why many at first confuse the average harpy for a deviltouched - the Deviltouched hold the urge to attack, but the harpies hold the urge to fight.
Notions of competition, personal glory, and most of all rage are imbued into the harpies from birth, and they have an inclination towards hotheadedness and short tempers as a result. Their Phoenix masters created them to fight until the worthiest could be found to stand by the Phoenixes' side, and so they tend to be quick studies with all forms of personal combat; they also, of course, tend to be arrogant and combative at the best of times. Any levelheaded harpy is one who has worked against their nature for many years to reach the same level of calm as the average human.
Almost all harpies from the Imitheomachy (often - incorrectly - shortened to the Theomachy by foreigners who have trouble with its more official name) who have reached adulthood are capable of flight, trained with at least one weapon, and are adept mountaineers and survivalists. Those incapable of fighting are often trained as seers and religious figures for their communities. It is rare that a harpy is used to meeting strangers - aside from the obvious difficulties in communication they experience for the first month or two, they also must contend with the fact that harpy warbands usually kill all outsiders they meet as a part of their ritual war-pilgrimages up the Mountains Ever Bright.
As harpies fight, subjugate, and gain power in service to the Phoenixes, they begin their own ascension to a form of demigodhood. The Valkyria are known by all in the Empire's east for their impossible feats of magic and strength, and generally serve as the leaders of harpy warbands. Those known by the title of "Polemarchos" are more powerful still, and none in the Empire - nor most in the Mountains themselves - have ever seen one and lived to tell the tale. Perhaps it is for them that the Imitheomachy receives its formal name, the Polemarchokratia. Or perhaps they are seen as such powerful avatars of the Phoenix gods of that land that they are named after the land itself.
