1.7 Demise of the Faithful - Trouble with Torix

General Summary

The party reunites and enters the tunnel found by Azarik and Paathio. There they chase Torix further in and engage him in combat, soon after he takes his own life and by doing so summons a Brain Eater which the party then kills.

The Emerald Estate

After claiming their spoils of war from Torix's office, Gorky, Dart, and Rexis investigated the rest of the Estate's second floor. First they found what appears to be Torix's teleportation circle room. Following that they discovered Torix's private quarters, connected to which is his treasury, which strangely didn't seem to have very much gold within. Realizing they'd found all they could they decided to reconvene with the rest of the party.

Orinn Outskirts

Paathio and Azarik investigated the trail she found, and on it they found another boulder that has some sort of enchantment. They decided to tip the boulder over and discovered that it is hollow within, and was hiding a secret passageway, much like the one they entered the forest from. At the entrance they also discovered dried blood, which lay in a pattern that suggested whatever it came from was being dragged along the path. They entered the tunnel and tried to see where it led but were blocked by an invisible barrier. As an experiment Paathio threw her knife through the barrier to see if it would go through, and it did, but she and Azarik still couldn't get through themselves. Sensing they'd done all they could they decided to go back to the party.

Party Reunited

After reuniting the party held a bit of a meeting to decide their next course of action. In the end they decided to try to investigate the tunnel as a group. There they found Torix at the entrance, they tried to sneak up on him but were noticed resulting in him fleeing within. The adventures gave chase and made it past the barrier which seemed to have been removed. Paathio picked up her dagger as she ran and the party cornered Torix in what seemed to be a chamber dedicated to a ritual of sorts. On the floor behind him lay a spell circle, and at the perimeter of the circle were four bodies. After a quick back and forth with Torix where they learned that he was devoted to the god Cryic, and that the ritual he was hoping to complete still needed another day, they engaged him in combat. It was an relatively easy fight, but just as the party was about to kill him he stepped onto the summoning circle himself and took his own life.

The Brain Eater

At this point the spell circle began to glow and a ray of light appeared within the center. From within this light tendrils shot up ad dug into the heads of the corpses surrounding it, and ripped the brains of the deceased from their heads, pulling them back into the light. A moment later a huge beast rose from the summoning circle, a beast the party would learn is an aberration known as a Brain Eater. The party fought against it, in a difficult battle, with Paathio coming close to losing her life. However despite this close call Paathio was able to wear down the beast, and after a devastating strike from Rexis, Gorky was able to finish it off.
