Classical

Classical (Classical: lingua classicus), or Classical Old Worlder, is descended from the highly codified language spoken by the educated classes of the Tylos people who once settled near the modern-day location of Miragliano in Tilea. It was the first Human Old Worlder language with a modern written form, which made it dominant when it came to early academic records. Gradually, the language spread, evolved, and independently developed into many other languages, including Tilean, Estalian, Bretonnian, and the diverse languages of the Border Princes. Because of its ubiquitous use in scholastic and theological work, it has influenced most Old Worlder languages to at least some degree.

To many, Classical is a dead language, but it is still widely taught and spoken in academic circles, largely thanks to the Cult of Verena's preference for its use in their many texts and records.

Because of its relative rarity, academics often deploy Classical in correspondences to keep their business secret from the less well-educated. Many students, scholars, and clergy of the cults of Verena, Shallya, Sigmar, Morr, and Myrmidia speak Classical fluently, though variations of pronunciation are frequent as none have natively spoken the language for many centuries.

It is common to find mottos, engravings, prayer scrolls, and similar written in Classical, as it is believed to lend legitimacy to the recorded words.

The Cult of Verena has long claimed that Classical was a gift from its goddess to humanity, and is thus a holy language.
